The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 624, against 635 in December—a decrease of 11. The deaths in January were 214—a decrease of 30 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 116, females 98. Thirty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 17·76 per cent. of the whole number; 27 of these were under one year of age.
There were 55 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 69 in December. The following table shows the classification :—
