PIEDRAS BLANCAS LIGHTHOUSE.—BREAKERS REPORTED TO WESTWARD.—The master of the steamer “Rosalie Mahony” reports a heavy breaker 3 miles, 292° 20′, from Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, sea-coast of California.

The weather at the time of making the discovery, 26th May, 1913, at 3 p.m., was clear, overcast, and calm, with a heavy swell from the southward.

Pending an examination of the locality, a danger curve, marked “Breakers reported,” will be placed on the charts in the assigned position.

Approximate position of Piedras Blancas Lighthouse: Latitude 35° 39′ 57″ N., longitude 121° 17′ 1″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SAN PABLO BAY.—CARQUINEZ STRAIT LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE MOVED.—About 1st January, 1914, the fog-siren at Carquinez Strait Light-station, San Pablo Bay, California, will be moved about 200 yards, 246°, to the outer end of Mare Island Dike No. 9, without other change.

Approximate position of Carquinez Strait Light: Latitude 38° 4′ 9″ N., longitude 122° 14′ 35″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—WRECK GAS AND BELL BUOY ESTABLISHED.—On 15th December, 1913, a conical gas and bell buoy, showing, 10 ft. above the water, an intermittent red light of 40 candle-power every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—was established in 6¾ fathoms of water about 100 ft. north-westward of the wreck of the schooner “J. H. Lunsman,” sunk 623 yards, 25°, from Black Point, San Francisco Bay, California, on the bearings—

The illuminating apparatus is a lens lantern burning oil-gas.

SUISUN BAY.—MALLARD AND CHIPPS ISLANDS FERRY SLIPS.—LIGHTS AND FOG-SIGNALS ESTABLISHED.—On 1st December, 1913, the following lights and fog-signals were established at the ferry slips on Mallard and Chipps Islands, Suisun Bay, California :—

Mallard Island Ferry Slip.

West Wing.—A fixed green light, of about 90 candle-power, exhibited 25 ft. above the water on the end of dolphin, on the bearings—

Van Sickle Island light .. .. 61° 45′
New York Slough west-end light .. 92° 15′
Stake Point light .. .. 289°

A fog-bell, struck by machinery, a single stroke every 5 seconds, was established alongside the green light.

East Wing.—A fixed red light, of about 80 candle-power, exhibited 25 ft. above the water on the end of dolphin, 370 ft., 100°, from the green light on the west wing.

Chipps Island Ferry Slip.

West Wing.—A fixed red light, of about 80 candle-power, exhibited 25 ft. above the water on the end of dolphin, on the bearings—

A fog-bell, struck by machinery, a double stroke every 6 seconds, was established alongside the red light.

East Wing.—A fixed green light, of about 90 candle-power, exhibited 25 ft. above high water on the end of dolphin, 410 ft., 101° 30′, from the red light on the west wing.

The illuminant for the above lights is electricity.

CHINA.

HONG KONG.—CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHTS ON LIGHT-BUOYS TO BE CHANGED.—Information, dated 20th September, 1913, has been received that about 1st January, 1914, the fixed red light on Cust Rocks Light-buoy, Hong Kong Harbour, China, will be replaced by a flashing white light every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·2 second, eclipsed 2·8 seconds.

This buoy is now painted red and white in horizontal bands.

On the same date the fixed red light on each of the two fairway buoys will be replaced by a similar flashing white light.

Approximate position of northern light-buoy: Latitude 22° 18′ N., longitude 114° 8′ E.

YANGTZE RIVER.—CHUNGPAOSHA (BUSH ISLAND).—QUARANTINE BEACON MOVED.—Owing to the washing-away of the western end of Chungpaosha (Bush Island), Yangtze River, China, the quarantine beacon has been moved, and re-established 3·55 miles, 45°, from Woosung Lighthouse.

Approximate position of Woosung Lighthouse: Latitude 31° 23′ 18″ N., longitude 121° 30′ 3″ E.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SAMOA ISLANDS.—TUTUILA ISLAND.—AUNUU ISLAND LIGHT IMPROVED.—On 12th November, 1913, the luminous power of AunuuIsland light, Tutuila Island, Samoa Islands, was increased from 45 to 160 candles by changing the illuminating apparatus from a lens lantern to a 4th order lens.

Approx. position: Lat. 14° 18′ 45″ S., long. 170° 34′ 20″ W.

SOLOMON ISLANDS.—FLORIDA ISLAND.—BARANAGO HARBOUR.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—The commanding officer of H.B.M. surveying vessel “Sealark” reports that an occasional fixed white light, elevated 198 ft. above the sea, and visible 5 miles, is exhibited on Bungana Island, Baranago Harbour, Florida Island, Solomon Islands.

This light is located about 350 yards, 238°, from the mission flagstaff, and is visible over an arc of 245° from 238° to 123°.

Approx. position: Lat. 9° 10′ 40″ S., long. 160° 11′ 50″ E.

JAVA.

NORTH COAST.—BATAVIA ROADSTEAD.—LIGHT-BUOY DISCONTINUED.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the light-buoy exhibiting a fixed white light, marking the north-eastern edge of Van Dorth Reef, Batavia Road, north coast of Java, in (approximately) latitude 6° 4′ 6″ S., longitude 106° 52′ 36″ E., has been replaced by a white conical buoy.

LIGHT-BUOY DISCONTINUED.—Notice is given that the light-buoy exhibiting a fixed white light, recently established 1,000 yards, 60°, from Tanjong Periuk, Eastern Harbour light, Batavia Roadstead, north coast of Java, has been discontinued.

SUMATRA.

EAST COAST.—BERHALA STRAIT.—SPEKE ROCK LIGHT-BUOY TO BE DISCONTINUED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the light-buoy marking Speke Rock, Berhala Strait, east coast of Sumatra, will shortly be discontinued, on the establishment of the intended light on Muju Island.

MASTERS of vessels and others are hereby informed that sixth order port lights have been established at the following places, instead of the low-power lights previously exhibited :—

SPENCER GULF.—ARNO BAY.

A fixed red light at seaward end of jetty, on lattice tower, at a height of 15 ft. above high water; a white light at inner end of jetty, on cast-iron pillar, at a height of 23 ft. above high water: Bearing from seaward of lights in line, 320° (N. 45° W. mag.). The lights are 1,230 ft. apart. Visible about 5 miles in clear weather.

ST. VINCENT GULF.—EDITHBURGH.

A fixed white light at seaward end of jetty, on cast-iron pillar, at a height of 24 ft. above high water, visible about 9 miles in clear weather between the bearings of 202° (S. 17° 30′ W. mag.) and 342° (N. 22° 30′ W. mag.).

KANGAROO ISLAND.—KINGSCOTE.

A fixed red light at seaward end of jetty, on cast-iron pillar, at a height of 26 ft. above high water, visible about 4 miles. The red light at inner end of jetty unaltered.

Sixth order port lights have also been established at the following places, where hitherto no lights have been exhibited :—

SPENCER GULF.—PORT HUGHES.

A fixed white light at seaward end of jetty, on cast-iron pillar, 30 ft. above high water, visible between the bearings of 65° (N. 60° E. mag.) and 120° (S. 65° E. mag.) for a distance of about 9 miles in clear weather, and showing a red sector over Cape Elizabeth between the bearings of 50° (N. 45° E. mag.) and 65° (N. 60° E.); also a red sector over the shallow water off Long Point, showing between the bearings 120° (S. 65° E. mag.) and 152° (S. 33° E.).
