SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN, SOLOMON ISLANDS.—FLORIDA ISLAND.

Baranago Harbour.—Details of Occasional Light.

Position.—On Bungana Island, on site of △, at a distance of 1½ cables southward from the north extreme of the island. Lat. 9° 10¾′ S., long. 160° 12¾′ E.

Abridged description.—Lt. F., 198 ft., vis. 5 m. (occasional).

Details.—Character: A fixed white lantern light. Elevation: 198 ft. Visibility: 5 miles, from 238° (S. 49° W. Mag.), through west, &c., to 123° (S. 66° E. Mag.).

Remarks.—This light is referred to in the Supplement to the “Pilot.”

Note.—The arc of visibility of this light has not been placed on the charts.

Variation.—9° E.

NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—CAROLINE ISLANDS.

Ianthe Shoal: Amended Position.

Position.—At a distance of 12 miles, north-westward, from the position now shown on the charts. Lat. 5° 58′ N., long. 145° 27′ E.

Remarks.—This shoal has a least depth of 4¾ fathoms over it, as at present ascertained, and is from 3 to 4 miles in extent.

Note.—“P.D.” shown on the charts against Ianthe Shoal in its former position has been erased, but the note with regard to its probable identity with Nile Shoal has been retained.

CEYLON, SOUTH COAST.

Hambantota.—Position of New Lighthouse.

Former Notice.—No. 1374 of 1913.

Position.—On summit of point, at a distance of 1,020 ft., 276° (N. 83° W. Mag.), from the position of the old lighthouse. Lat. 6° 7¼′ N., long. 81° 7½′ E.

Note.—The old lighthouse has been erased from the charts.

Variation.—1° W.

CHINA, EAST COAST.—YANG TSE KIANG ENTRANCE.

Shaweishan (North) Channel.—Amendments to “China Pilot,” Vol. V.

Page 381.—After line 9 add “CAUTION.—The resounding of the locality and the correction of the charts is not undertaken with sufficient frequency to render safe the navigation of this locality, except with an ample margin of depth.”

Page 387.—Cancel lines 8 to 13, inclusive, from bottom of page. The tide-gauge does not exist and tidal signals are not made.

BRAZIL, EAST COAST.

Rio de Janeiro.—Intended Alteration in Time-signal.

Position.—At Observatory on Monte Castello. Lat. 22° 54′ 24″ S., long. 43° 10′ 21″ W.

Details.—On and after the 1st January, 1914, the drum will be dropped at noon, standard time, corresponding to 3h. 0m. 0s. Greenwich mean time, instead of at local mean noon as at present.

INDIA, WEST COAST.

Bombay Approach.—Buoy established.

Position.—At a distance of 3 miles and half a cable, 273° (N. 88° W. Mag.), from Mahalukshmi Temple. Lat. 18° 58′ 40″ N., long. 72° 45′ 27″ E., on chart No. 2621.

Description.—A red conical buoy for military purposes.

Variation.—1° E.

STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR.—SPAIN.

Tarifa Point.—Bell-buoy with Submarine-bell re-established.

Position.—At a distance of 2 cables, 208° (S. 42° W. Mag.), from Tarifa Point Lighthouse, in position formerly occupied by the bell-buoy. Lat. 35° 59¾′ N., long. 5° 36¾′ W.

Description.—A bell-buoy with submarine-bell.

Remarks.—This buoy must be regarded as experimental only.

Variation.—14° W.

SOUTH AFRICA.

(1.) Slang Kop Point.—Wireless Weather-reports made Daily.

Position.—Wireless-station, lat. 34° 8¾′ S., long. 18° 19½′ E.

Details.—A weather-report is made from the wireless-station every afternoon at one o’clock, except on Sundays, and contains meteorological information affecting the coasts of the Union of South Africa.

(2.) Port Natal.—Wireless Weather-reports made Daily.

Position.—Wireless-station, lat. 29° 52¾′ S., long. 31° 3¾′ E.

Details.—A weather-report is made from the wireless-station every afternoon at one o’clock, except on Sundays, and contains meteorological information affecting the coasts of the Union of South Africa.

AFRICA.

Stony Pr.—A submerged obstruction, on which the S.S. “Chenab” is reported to have struck, is reported to lie in 32° 31½′ S., 28° 37¼′ E., about 1¼ miles from the shore. NOTE.—“Obstruction reported hereabouts (1913),” has been charted in the above position. Nov.

Port Natal.—The f. red lt. on the N. pier-head (29° 52′ S., 31° 4′ E.) has been replaced by an occ. red lt. vis. 2 secs., ecl. 1 sec., R. 4 miles. Nov.

Cape Fitzwilliam.—A gp. fl. white lt., with gp. of 4 fls. every 10 secs., elev. 165 ft., R. 19 miles, is exh. from a square iron lt.-h. 30 ft. high, in 17° 14½′ S., 38° 12¾′ E. NOTE.—Cape Fitzwilliam is also known as “Ponta Matirre,” and this name has been added on chart No. 1810. Dec.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

Banka Isl.—Goat Reef Lt.—This f. white lt. (2° 12′ S., 106° 29½′ E.) has been replaced by an occ. red lt. (U), vis. 4 secs., ecl. 2 secs., elev. 62 ft., R. 12 miles, exh. from a white iron frame; and the black lt.-buoy on the S.W. edge of Goat Reef has been withdrawn. Dec.

Pulo Datu.—A shoal of mud and sand, carrying about 4 fms., on which the S.S. “Ume Maru” touched, is reported to exist in 1¼′ S., 108° 36¼′ E., 9 miles 181° (S. Mag.) from the summit of Pulo Datu. The shoal has been marked “P.D.” on the charts. Dec.

Durian Strait.—Pulo Pelangkat.—An occ. white lt., vis. 1½ secs., ecl. 1½ secs., elev. 36 ft., R. 10 miles, is exh. from a white iron frame, in 44′ 50″ N., 103° 35′ 10″ E., on ern. side of isl. near its srm. end. Dec.

INDIAN OCEAN.

Bay of Bengal.—Rangoon River.—Owing to dredging operations in progress, Monkey Pt. chan. is closed to nav. until further notice.

Position: Monkey Pt., 16° 46′ N., 96° 12′ E. Dec.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

Vancouver Island.—Victoria Harbour.—Middle Rock Light-beacon replaced by Light-buoy.—Rock being removed.—On 15th December, 1913, the white incandescent electric light heretofore shown from a dolphin off Middle Rock, Victoria Harbour, British Columbia, will be discontinued, and replaced by a platform buoy showing a fixed white oil light.

This change is made in order to allow a drill plant to work on the excavation of this rock.

While at work the drill plant will show the regulation lights. When Middle Rock has been removed a new dolphin, showing an electric light, will be established, the position of which will be given later.

Approximate position of Middle Rock Beacon: Latitude 48° 25′ 25″ N., longitude 123° 22′ 35″ W.

West Coast.—Barkley Sound.—Sechart.—Steamer no longer available for Life-saving Service.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the whaling steamer “Orion” is no longer available for life-saving service on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Chatham Sound.—Prince Rupert Harbour.—Pillsbury Point.—Fog-bell established.—A fog-bell, operated by machinery, which sounds 2 strokes in quick succession every 10 seconds, has been established on Pillsbury Point, Prince Rupert Harbour, Chatham Sound, British Columbia.

The bell is erected on a platform surmounting an open framework tower, square in plan, with sloping sides, painted white, standing on a cribwork pier about 150 ft. westward of the railway-track.

The top of the tower is 25 ft. above high-water mark.

Approx. position: Lat. 54° 17′ 56″ N., long. 130° 21′ 9″ W.

WASHINGTON.

Cape Flattery Light.—Characteristic to be changed.—About 15th June, 1914, the characteristic of Cape Flattery light, Washington, will be changed from fixed to intermittent white every 30 seconds — thus, light 16 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds, light 4 seconds, eclipsed 2 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 23′ 30″ N., long. 124° 44′ 6″ W.
