light will flash 40 times per minute and will be exhibited
from an open ironwork tower painted red, fixed on four
wooden piles in 7 ft. L.W.S.T. Red sectors will show between
the bearings 126° (S. 57° 41′ E. mag.) and 141° (S. 42° 21′
E. mag.) and over Fairway Rock from 22° (N. 18° 39′ E.
mag.) to 37° (N. 33° 39′ E. mag.); the light will be obscured
between the red sectors over the land to the westward. The
focal plane will be 17 ft. above H.W. and should be visible
6 miles in fine weather.

Approx. position: Lat. 32° 44′ 40″ S., long. 134° 14′ E.
This affects Admiralty Chart No. 1061.

WEST AUSTRALIA.

CAMBRIDGE GULF.—CHANNEL ROCK.—The beacon marking
these rocks has disappeared. Chart affected, No. 1388.

KING SOUND.—POINT TORMENT, ELBOW SHOAL.—The two
black buoys north of this shoal have been removed. Chart
affected, No. 1052.

PORT HEDLAND.—Outer Bar.—In crossing this bar deeper
water has been obtained by keeping the leading-beacons
open, slightly either east or west.

Middle Ground.—This has shoaled considerably of late
years. The dry portion of the bank has extended as a narrow
ridge to the north and westward of buoy. Vessels should
round buoy fifty yards off.

The single pile beacon (red) off Harriet Point has dis-
appeared. Chart affected, No. 1437.

ONSLOW, ASHBURTON ROADS.—The stake beacon on spit
at entrance to Ashburton River has disappeared. Chart
affected, No. 3152.

HAMELIN BAY.—Buoys marking channel and mooring-
buoys have been removed. Charts affected, Nos. 1472,
1054.

SHOALS.—The discovery of the following shoals is reported
by H.M.S. “Fantome”:

Shoals between James Price Point and Station Hill.

(1.) A chain of shoals of less than 5 fathoms at L.W.O.S.,
of irregular shape, running in a N.N.E.’ly direction 13 cables
from the shoalest part, which has a least depth of 12 ft. over
it at L.W.O.S. and lies 330½° (N. 32° W. mag.) 3·88 miles
from Gantheaume Point light, and 273½° (N. 88° W. mag.)
4·02 miles from Station Hill. In between these shoals are
depths of 6 to 7 fathoms.

(2.) A small coral head with a depth of 32 ft. at L.W.O.S.
is situated 324° (N. 37½° W. mag.) 5·50 miles from Gantheaume
Point light and 283½° (N. 78° W. mag.) 5·50 miles from Station
Hill. This shoal is surrounded by depths of 6 to 7 fathoms.

(3.) A small coral head with a depth of 32 ft. at L.W.O.S.
is situated 338½° (N. 23° W. mag.) 5·32 miles from Gantheaume
Point light and 294½° (N. 67° W. mag.) 4·40 miles from Station
Hill. This shoal is surrounded by depths of 6 fathoms.

(4.) A small coral head with a depth of 32 ft. at L.W.O.S.
is situated 329° (N. 32½° W. mag.) 11·79 miles from Gan-
theaume Point light and 310½° (N. 51° W. mag.) 10·74 miles
from Station Hill. This shoal is surrounded by depths of
6 to 8 fathoms.

(5.) A small coral head with a depth of 33 ft. at L.W.O.S.
is situated 320° (N. 41½° W. mag.) 9·65 miles from Station
Hill and 339° (N. 22½° W. mag.) 11·32 miles from Gantheaume
Point light. This shoal is surrounded by depths of 7 to 8
fathoms.

(6.) A shoal of sand and coral with a depth of 26 ft. at
L.W.O.S. is situated 190½° (S. 9° W. mag.) 11·25 miles from
the 87 summit on James Price Point, and 337° (N. 24½° W.
mag.) 15·65 miles from Station Hill. From this head the
shoal extends in a nor’easterly direction 1½ cables, in an
easterly direction 1½ cables, in a southerly direction 1½ cables,
and has depths of 4¾ to 5 fathoms. It is surrounded by
depths of 6 to 7 fathoms.

(7.) A small shoal of sand and coral having a depth of
30 ft. at L.W.O.S. is situated 212½° (S. 31° W. mag.) 10·92
miles from the 87 summit on James Price Point, and 329°
(N. 32½° W. mag.) 19·00 miles from Station Hill. From this
head the shoal extends in a nor’easterly direction for one
cable. It is surrounded by depths of 6 to 10 fathoms.

Shoals near James Price Point.

(8.) A shoal of sand and coral with a depth of 24 ft. at
L.W.O.S. is situated 285° (N. 76½° W. mag.) 2·27 miles from
the 87 summit on James Price Point, and 202½° (S. 21° W.
mag.) 7·56 miles from the 97 summit just south of Coulomb
Point. The 5-fathoms line surrounding the shoal extends
285° (N. 76½° W. mag.) 2·77 miles from the above-mentioned
87 summit, 9 cables south, and 3 cables north from the above-
mentioned 24 ft.

A depth of 30 ft. sand and coral at L.W.O.S. is situated
244° (S. 62½° W. mag.) 2·88 miles from the 87 summit on
James Price Point, and 200° (S. 19½° W. mag.) 9·44 miles
from the 97 summit just south of Coulomb Point. The
5-fathom line surrounding this shoal lies 4 cables in a north-
and-south direction and 3 cables in an east-and-west direction
from this head.

A depth of 28 ft. sand and coral at L.W.O.S. is situated
231½° (S. 50° W. mag.) 3·36 miles from the 87 summit on
James Price Point and 199° (S. 17½° W. mag.) 10·2 miles
from the 97 summit just south of Coulomb Point. The
5-fathom line surrounding this shoal lies 1 cable west, 2 cables
east, 1 cable north, and 1 cable south from this head.

QUEENSLAND.

BRISBANE RIVER.—ENTRANCE CUTTING.—ADDITIONAL
BEACONS AND LIGHTS AND REMOVAL OF THE FLOATING
LIGHT.—Notice is hereby given that, on and after 2nd October,
two additional beacons will be erected to further mark the
Bar cutting similar to the existing beacons. They will be
placed in a depth of 18 ft. at L.W.S., distant 10,000 ft. from
the pile light, and each one will be 350 ft. from the centre-
line of the cutting.

The beacons will be carried on a skeleton steel frame with
red and black topmarks respectively, and a small white light
will be exhibited at night from each beacon. Temporary
lights are now being exhibited during construction.

On and after the date named the floating light near the pile
light will be discontinued, and the white light formerly
shown from the west beacon—i.e., the innermost red beacon
marking the Bar cutting—will be again exhibited.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

OAHU ISLAND.—KANEOHE BAY.—RANGE-LIGHTS ESTA-
BLISHED.—On 1st August, 1914, two range-lights known as
the Mokolii range-lights, were established by the Hawaiian
Development Co. (Ltd.) at Kaneohe Bay, north-east coast
of Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands.

The front light is fixed red, of about 20 candle-power,
exhibited about 25 ft. above the water from a white mast,
on the bearings—

Mokolii Island .. .. .. 40°
Mokumanu Island, left tangent .. .. 97°
Ohulehule Peak .. .. .. 316°

The rear light is fixed red, of about 20 candle-power, ex-
hibited about 65 ft. above the water from a white mast,
bearing 241° 30′ from the front light, on the bearings—

Mokolii Island .. .. .. 42°
Mokumanu Island, left tangent .. .. 96°
Ohulehule Peak .. .. .. 322°

These lights are exhibited on nights when steamers are
expected.

WASHINGTON.

WILLAPA BAY LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—IN-
TENSITY INCREASED.—On 15th August, 1914, the character-
istic of Willapa Bay light was changed from fixed white
varied by a white flash every 2 minutes to fixed white varied
by a white flash every 20 seconds.

The luminous power of the fixed light was increased to
2,900 candles, and that of the flash to about 12,000 candles,
by changing the illuminant from oil to incandescent oil
vapour.

Approx. position: Lat. 46° 43′ N., long. 124° 4′ 25″ W.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SAMOA ISLANDS.—TUTUILA ISLAND.—ROCK DISCOVERED.
—FURTHER INFORMATION.—Information has been received
from the commanding officer of the U.S.S. “Princeton”
that a dangerous submerged rock has been discovered off
Round Bluff, between Aunuu Island and Pago Pago Harbour,
the rock bearing 147° from the bluff, distant 2,600 ft. from the
point of tangency.

This rock is 20 ft. in extent, with 11 ft. of water over it,
and rises at a sharp angle from a depth of 20 fathoms on the
southern side and drops precipitately to a depth of 12 fathoms
on the northern side.

AUSTRALIA, NORTH COAST.—TORRES STRAIT.

FLINDERS PASSAGE.—DECREASED DEPTHS.—Position:
Scott Rock, lat. 10° 33½′ S., long. 142° 18½′ E. Details: An
examination of the portion of Flinders Passage, southward
of Scott Rock and Chapman Reef, has disclosed a general
decrease in depths. Charts affected, Nos. 691, 437, 2375,
and 2354. Note: Chapman Reef dries 2 ft.

CHINA, EAST COAST.—YANG TSE KIANG.

ANKING REACH, LANG-KIANG-KI.—EXISTENCE OF A ROCK.
—Position: At a distance of 2 miles and 1½ cables, 211°
(S. 33° W. mag.) from Taitzechi light-beacon. Lat. 30° 35½′
N., long. 117° 11½′ E. Depth: 5 ft. Description: A pinnacle
rock. Variation: 2° W.
