IN accordance with section 24 of the Education Act, 1908, I hereby declare JOHN ANDERSON MILLER to be duly elected a member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, as a representative of the Middle Ward thereof, vice Mr. Charles M. Whittington, deceased.

Notice to Mariners No. 99 of 1914.

ERRATA FOR NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC FOR 1914.

Wellington, N.Z., 27th October, 1914.

READERS of the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac” for this year are requested to make the following corrections in their copies, viz. :—

On page 52, under heading “Planets and Bright Stars to be seen at Wellington, New Zealand, on 15th October, 1914,” should read: Mars sets 7 h. 48 m. Venus sets 10 h. 1 m. Jupiter rises 0 h. 15 m. and sets 14 h. 25 m. Saturn rises bearing N. 60° E. and sets bearing N. 60° W.

On page 54, under heading “On 15th November, 1914”: Mars sets 7 h. 37 m. Venus sets 8 h. 35 m. Jupiter sets 12 h. 29 m.

On page 56, under heading “On 15th December, 1914”: Jupiter sets 10 h. 43 m. Venus rises 14 h. 56 m. Mer. Passage 21 h. 57 m. Mars rises 16 h. 24 m., sets 7 h. 25 m.

The times of the rising and setting of the planets in previous months of this year have also been incorrectly given whenever the planets have been in South declination, the hour

angle applied to the time of Meridian passage having been calculated for a body of contrary, instead of same, name as latitude.

TIDAL SIGNALS AT FRENCH PASS LIGHTHOUSE.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after Monday, 16th November, 1914, the following tide-signals will be shown from the yardarm of the flagstaff at the French Pass Lighthouse :—

Ebb stream running: One ball under the yard.
Flood stream running: Two balls shown vertically under the yard 3 ft. apart.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 1096, 2684, and 2685; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vi, page 185.

Opening Settlement Land in Canterbury Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Christchurch, 24th October, 1914.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned land is open for selection on renewable lease, and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Christchurch, and the local Lands and Survey Office, Timaru, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Monday, 13th December, 1914.

Applicants will have to appear personally before the Land Board at the local Lands and Survey Office, Timaru, at 12 o’clock noon on Tuesday, the 15th December, 1914, to answer any questions the Land Board may ask, but if any applicant so desires he may be examined by the Land Board of the district in which he resides.

The ballot, if there is more than one applicant, will be held at the local Lands and Survey Office, Timaru, immediately after the examination of applicants.

Preference will be given to landless applicants who have children dependent on them, or who have within the preceding two years applied for land at least twice unsuccessfully.
