The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 572, against 629 in August—a decrease of 57. The deaths in September were 269—a decrease of 22 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 146, females 123. Fifty-three of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 19·70 per cent. of the whole number; 45 of these were under one year of age.

There were 97 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 106 in August. The following table shows the classification :—
