Ring-fenced with the exception of the southern boundary of about 45 chains on the west side of the road. The section is divided into four paddocks on the east side of the by road which divides the property; fences are post and wire in fair and good repair. Situated four miles from Ongaonga and fourteen miles from Waipawa.

Section 6, Block IV (Springhill Homestead).—Altitude, 775 ft. to 950 ft. About 288 acres have been ploughed, of which approximately 222 acres have been laid down in grass, 16 acres have been in oats, and 50 acres in turnips. The balance is all in good native grass with a little scattered manuka in the south of the section, and about 50 acres of high manuka scrub near the turnip-paddock. The area north of the road is not watered, and is suitable for cropping; the area south of the road is well watered by main streams. The northern area is ring-fenced with the exception of 45 chains on the north boundary, and the section is ring-fenced south of the road with the exception of 71 chains bounding Section 7. The section is at present subdivided into four paddocks, but upon completion of the boundary-fencing described before eight paddocks will be obtained. The quality of the land throughout is good. Soil of brown and black loam, resting on shingle on flats and on clay on hills. Situated three miles and three-quarters from Ongaonga and thirteen miles and three-quarters from Waipawa by main metalled road.

Section 7, Block IV.—Similar to Section 6 as regards altitude, description of land, and soil, and is equally good agricultural and pastoral land. It is all ploughable, with the exception of one hill-face from the flat to the terrace-top. Well watered by main streams. On the north side of the road about 153 acres have been ploughed, of which 106 acres have been in rape and mustard, and 47 acres are laid down in grass. The creeks are protected by willow-trees which give good shelter. The area also contains a plantation of some 20 acres of mixed gums, pines, and wattles about seven or eight years of age. The whole is ring-fenced, with the exception of some 17 chains round Section 8. On the area south of the road about 133 acres have been ploughed, of which 100 acres have been in oats, 22 acres have been well grassed, and 11 acres have not yet been sown. The balance is in good native grass. The area is ring-fenced with the exception of 71 chains bounding Section 6. Situated three miles to three miles and a quarter from Ongaonga and about thirteen miles from Waipawa by main metalled road.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

Springhill Settlement is situated on the south bank of the Waipawa River, and is intersected by the main metalled road from Waipawa via the Township of Ongaonga to Blackburn, and also by branch metalled road to Wakarara. The nearest point of the settlement is three miles and a quarter from Ongaonga and thirteen miles from Waipawa Railway-station, and the farthest section is eight miles from Ongaonga and eighteen miles from Waipawa. The property consists of flat land and terraces, for the most part ploughable, and of which considerable areas have already been cropped successfully with oats, swedes, and rape. The formation ranges from light shingly loam to rich loam, resting on clay; large portions have been sown down in English grasses, and the balance is well grassed with native grasses, except portions in manuka scrub. On some of the areas that have been ploughed Californian thistle is growing, but not to any appreciable extent. Elevation ranges from 700 ft. to 1,500 ft. above sea-level. The property is fairly well watered, but on some sections water will have to be obtained by sinking or conserved by dams. At present the nearest school is situated at the Township of Ongaonga, but a site for a school has been laid off on the estate. There is a bi-daily coach from Waipawa Railway-station to the rising Township of Ongaonga. The outside boundaries of the property are all fenced, and for the most part interior subdivisional fences are used as section-boundaries.
