The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, but raises it at Wellington.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 683, against 606 in August—an increase of 77. The deaths in September were 316—an increase of 78 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths males contributed 151, females 165. Sixty-five of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20·57 per cent. of the whole number; 48 of these were under one year of age.

There were 121 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 94 in August. The following table shows the classification :—
