Measured Mile.—Port Phillip Bay.
REFERRING to General Notice to Mariners dated 1st August, 1907, page 91, and to subsequent notice No. 112, dated 25th July, 1912, mariners and others are hereby notified that the rear or shore beacons have now been established, and the measured mile completed.
The front and rear beacons, which come into line on a bearing from seaward of N. 48 deg. E. magnetic, and mark the extremities of the mile, are each surmounted by a triangle, painted white, those on shore being inverted and so arranged that their vertices appear to make contact with those in front when running the course which bears S. 42 deg. E. magnetic, about 1⅓ miles from the shore, in 9 fathoms of water.
As the north-western beacon now serves the purpose of the red buoy formerly used to mark the low-water rock off Quiet Corner, such red buoy has now been removed.
Entrance to Port of Gippsland Lake.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that the bar at the entrance to the Port of Gippsland Lakes has shoaled to 8 ft. at low water.
Extreme caution should be exercised by strict compliance with “Wait Tide” signals and navigating the entrance under favourable weather conditions only.
Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 142, dated 13th inst., mariners and others are hereby further notified that the master of the s.s. “Queenscliff” reports a depth of 11 ft. low water on the bar, on a line slightly westward of the flagstaff in line with the outer end of Western Pier. The bar may therefore be navigated under moderate sea conditions by vessels of reasonable draught by crossing on the above-mentioned line, but immediately after crossing the bar mariners should haul to the eastward to usual fairway marks to clear broken water and obstructions off Western Pier end.
C. W. MACLEAN,
Port Officer.
