Notice of Date of Examinations.—Public Service Examinations.

Wellington, 30th April, 1913.

Extract from regulations made by the Public Service Commissioner, dated 1st April, 1913, section 172 : “The syllabus and procedure for the Civil Service Junior and Senior Examinations are adopted and shall remain in force for all Entrance Examinations during the year 1913, and for all Senior Examinations until February, 1914.”

NOTICE is hereby given of the intention to hold Public Service examinations—viz., the Public Service Entrance Examination (heretofore known as the Civil Service Junior Examination) and the Public Service Senior Examination (heretofore known as the Civil Service Senior Examination), as follows :—

Public Service Entrance Examination : On or about 18th November, 1913, and following days.

Public Service Senior Examination : On or about 5th January, 1914, and following days.

No entrance fee will be payable for the Public Service Entrance Examination or the Public Service Senior Examination.

Entries for the Public Service Entrance Examination and the Public Service Senior Examination must be addressed “The Inspector-General of Schools, Wellington,” and be sent so as to reach him on or before the 8th September, 1913, and 15th October, 1913, respectively. No application received after the date herein specified will be considered, and the provision heretofore existing in regard to late entries is abolished.

All entries must be made on the proper forms which may be obtained at any time after the 1st July from the office of the Public Service Commissioner, or of the Education Department, or of any Education Board.

Dunedin Brass-finishers.—Recommendation of Conciliation Council.

In the matter of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1908, and its amendments; and in the matter of an industrial dispute, relating to brass-finishers, between the Dunedin Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers’ Industrial Union of Workers, applicant, and J. Anderson and Co. and others, respondents.

THE following recommendation of the Conciliation Council appointed to hear the above dispute is published pursuant to subsection (4) of section 43 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act, 1908, and number 34 of the regulations thereunder.

RECOMMENDATION.

Hours of Work.

  1. FORTY-SEVEN hours shall constitute a week’s work, of which eight hours and a half shall be worked on each working-day except Saturday, and four hours and a half on Saturday.

Overtime.

  1. All time worked in excess of the time mentioned in clause 1 hereof in any one day shall be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter for the first two hours, and thereafter at the rate of time and a half.

Holidays.

  1. (a.) Work done on New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, or the King’s Birthday shall be paid for at the rate of time and a half.
    (b.) Work done on Sunday, Good Friday, Labour Day, or Christmas Day shall be paid for at the rate of double time.

Wages.

  1. (a.) All journeymen brass-finishers shall receive not less than 1s. 4d. per hour.
    (b.) Machinists working nibbling, facing, boring, or grinding machines not to come under the operation of this clause, except such machines are worked by brass-finishers.

Apprentices.

  1. (a.) An employer taking an apprentice to learn the trade shall be deemed to undertake the duty which he agrees to perform
