The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Dunedin and five suburban boroughs Including the suburbs, the rate at Auckland is the highest, and at Christchurch the lowest.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 577, against 560 in February-an increase of 17. The deaths in March were 268 - an increase of 12 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 136, females 132. Sixty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 2571 per cent. of the whole number; 56 of these were under one year of age.

There were 73 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 74 in February. The following table shows the classification:-
