cattle on the flats and easier ridges. Section 7 consists of
rough undulating country, with very broken spurs and valleys.
There is a homestead site on Section 6 on the branch road on
the south of the section, and on Section 7 on the northern
boundary. Both sections are covered with a heavy forest of
tawa, hinau, kahikatea, pukatea, rata, rimu, totara, &c., in
the valleys, and birch, tawhero, and rewarewa on the ridges,
with a mixed undergrowth of karamu, kotukutuku, raurekau,
wharangi, ponga, makomako, inahoe, toroa, supplejack, &c.
The soil is of good quality in gullies and valleys, but poorer
on ridges, resting on a papa and sandstone formation ; well
watered. Elevation, 600 ft. to 1,450 ft. above sea-level.

Opening Lands in Taranaki Land District for Sale or
Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, Arthur
William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of the
Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the
Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided by section one
hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare that
the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open
for sale or selection on Tuesday, the twenty-seventh day of
May, one thousand nine hundred and thirteen; and also
that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the
option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be
selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on re-
newable lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at
which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as
mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that
the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and
subject to the provisions of the Land Act, 1908.

FIRST-CLASS LAND.
Waitomo County.—Mapara Survey District.
Situated on the Mapara and Kurakura Roads. Access from
Kopaki Railway-station, from six to eight miles distant, by
surveyed road; but there are at present rough horse-tracks
to the sections from Kopaki and Mangapehi Railway-stations.
Section 5 comprises very steep country along the road front-
age, but much easier towards the back. Section 5 comprises
level country on each side of the Mapara Stream on the road
frontage, but through the centre in places the land is steep
and gorgy. The forest is generally heavy, comprising tawa,
rata, rimu, matai, kahikatea, pukatea, tawhero, hinau, rewa-
rewa, &c., with a dense undergrowth of supplejack, mahoe,
raurekau, ponga, kotukutuku, &c.; but on the northern
portion of Section 4 and the western corner of Section 5 there
is some fern and manuka country. The soil varies from in-
ferior to very good, on rhyolite formation, with indications
of pumice on the flats; the sections are well watered.

Situated on the Pukerimu Road. Access from Kopaki
Railway-station, from two to three miles distant, by surveyed
road; but there is at present a good rough horse-track from
Kopaki to the sections. The land comprises level and easy-
sloping to rather steep country, covered partly with mixed
light to heavy bush of tawa, rimu, pukatea, rewarewa, &c.,
with a heavy undergrowth of supplejack, wharango, raure-
kau, &c., and partly high fern and tutu, with light to heavy
manuka on the frontage. The soil is of medium quality,
resting on rhyolite formation; the sections are well watered.

Situated on the Mapara Road. Access from Kopaki Rail-
way-station, about six miles distant, by surveyed road. There
is at present a rough horse-track from the Mangapehi Rail-
way-station, about seven miles distant. The section com-
prises heavy mixed bush country, with a small portion of
high fern on the eastern boundary; steep along the road
frontage, rising to undulating country towards the northern
boundary, about two-thirds of the section being ploughable.
The section is a good one, and would make a fair dairy farm.
The forest comprises tawa, kahikatea, rimu, matai, &c., with
a heavy undergrowth of supplejack, raurekau, mahoe, ko-
nini, &c. The soil is of good quality, resting on rhyolite
formation; well watered.

the greater portion of Section 6 being ploughable; about
two-thirds of Section 6 is covered with high fern and tutu.
Section 11 is partly covered with a light to heavy mixed bush,
mostly tawa, with rimu, pukatea, rewarewa, rata, matai,
kahikatea, hinau, &c., and a dense undergrowth of supple-
jack, mahoe, raurekau, ponga, kotukutuku, &c. About the
centre of Section 11 there is a fern-and-manuka clearing. The
soil is of fair to good quality, resting on a rhyolite formation,
and the sections are well watered.

Situated on the Pukerimu and Kopaki Roads. Access from
Kopaki Railway-station, about a mile and a quarter, by sur-
veyed road; there is a good horse-track from Kopaki to the
section. The section comprises undulating country, partly
open and partly covered with mixed bush of tawa, rewarewa,
tawhero, &c., and a medium undergrowth; there is a swamp
in the southern corner, but easily drained. The soil is fair,
on rhyolite formation; well watered.

Situated on the Kurakura Road. Access from Kopaki
Railway-station, from four miles and a half to nine miles
distant, by surveyed road, or from Waimiha Railway-station,
from sixteen miles and a half to twenty miles distant, by
formed dray-road for twelve miles, 6 ft. track for three miles,
and the balance by pack-track and surveyed road. There is
a good horse-track from Mangapehi Railway-station to Sec-
tions 8, 9, 10, 6, and 4, and to within a mile of Section 11
and half-mile to Section 12. The land varies from very easy
flat and undulating to rather steep ridges; about 300 acres
at the back of Section 9 is well adapted for dairying, and
Sections 11 and 12 are mostly ploughable and well adapted
for dairying; on Section 10 there is a small portion of open
and manuka country along the road in the south-western
corner. The forest varies from fern and scrub to heavy bush,
comprising tawa, rata, rimu, kahikatea, tawhero, hinau, rewa-
rewa, matai, pukatea, &c., with a dense undergrowth of
supplejack, ponga, raurekau, mahoe, kotukutuku, &c. The
soil on Sections 8 and 6 varies from rather poor to good
quality, on papa and sandstone; medium on Section 10, on
sandstone and rhyolite; inferior to very good on Section 9,
good on Sections 11 and 12, and inferior to fair on Section 4,
all on rhyolite. There is a little pumice on Section 4 on the
flats. The sections are well watered.
