Consenting to the Assignment of a Lease under Section 311 of
the Native Land Act, 1909.

WHEREAS by section 311 of the Native Land Act,
1909, it is enacted that,—

  1. Except with the precedent consent of the Board, no
    lease or sublease of land leased by the Board under this Part
    of this Act or under Part II of the Native Land Settlement
    Act, 1907, shall be capable of being assigned to any other
    person ; nor, except with the precedent consent of the Board,
    shall any sublease of any land so demised, or any part thereof,
    be capable of being granted to any other person.
  2. Except with the approval of the Native Minister, the
    consent of the Board shall not be so given to any assignment
    or sublease in favour of a European :
  3. Nothing in this section applies to any disposition by will
    or by operation of law :
    And whereas a parcel of land known as Puninga No. 9
    Block is leased to Keepa Wirihana ; And whereas the said
    Keepa Wirihana is desirous of assigning his interest in the
    said lease to James Torrie, of Waerengahika : And whereas
    the Tairawhiti District Maori Land Board, after due inquiry,
    has recommended that the approval of the Native Minister
    be granted accordingly :
    Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Native Minister,
    in pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred upon me
    by the said section 311 of the Native Land Act, 1909, do
    hereby approve of the Tairawhiti District Maori Land Board
    granting precedent consent to Keepa Wirihana to assign his
    interest in the lease of Puninga No. 9 to James Torrie, of
    Waerengahika.
    As witness my hand this 21st day of February, 1913.

Notice to Mariners No. 24 of 1913.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—ICEBERG WARNING.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st February, 1913.

COMMANDER E. R. G. B. Evans, R.N., of the British
Antarctic Expedition R.Y.S. “Terra Nova,” reports
having passed two large icebergs in positions as under, viz. :—
Date : 1st February, 1913. Position : 64° 10' S. 159° E.
Length of berg : Twenty-one miles.
Date : 2nd February, 1913. Position : 62° 10' S. 158° E.
Length of berg : Five miles.

Owing to the large size of these bergs, it may be expected
that they will reach fairly low latitudes before disappearing
entirely.

information.

VICTORIA.

Submarine Mining, South Channel, Port Phillip.

It is hereby notified, for general information, that the waters
of the South Channel, between Nos. 5 and 9 buoys, northward
of an imaginary line drawn about 200 ft. south of the line of
Nos. 5 and 9 buoys, and parallel thereto, and southward of
an imaginary line, parallel thereto, through South Channel
Port, will be reserved from the 1st March to the 19th April,
1913, for the purpose of permitting submarine-mining practice.
Vessels should therefore not be navigated northward of
the southernmost imaginary boundary-line of the reserved
area above described.
