Gisborne Tailors.—Notice of Recommendation of Conciliation Council.
MEMORANDUM of agreement made this 16th day of September, 1912,
between the Auckland Tailors’ Industrial Union of Workers (Gis-
borne Branch) and the following employers:—

RECOMMENDATION.
SCHEDULE.
Hours of Labour.
- The hours of labour shall be forty-eight, and shall be regu-
lated by the employer between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on
five days of the week, and between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
In country districts it shall be permissible for some other day in
the week to be substituted for Saturday, as may be mutually agreed
upon by the employer and his worker.
Wages.
- The minimum weekly wage to men employed on weekly wages,
including pressers, shall be £2 10s. per week.
No deduction shall be made from this weekly wage save for time
lost through the worker’s own default.
Overtime and Holidays.
- All work performed beyond the hours prescribed in clause 1
hereof shall be considered as overtime, and shall be paid for in
accordance with the following scale: From 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.,
at the rate of time and a quarter; from 10 p.m. until midnight,
at the rate of time and a half; from midnight until 6 a.m., at the
rate of double time; 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., at the rate of time and a
quarter.
All work done on Sunday, Christmas Day, and Good Friday
shall be paid for at the rate of double time, and all work done on
Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, and Labour Day
shall be paid for at the rate of time and a half. No deductions
from weekly hands for the above holidays.
Any time lost by a worker through his own default shall be
deducted before overtime is allowed.
Apprentices.
- The proportion of apprentices to journeymen shall be as fol-
lows: For the first four men or any less number, one apprentice;
for more than four men and up to eight men, two apprentices;
and so on in the same proportion.
For the purpose of determining the number of apprentices to
journeymen, the calculation shall be based on a two-thirds full-
time employment of journeymen during the six months immediately
prior to taking an apprentice. - (a.) Any employer taking an apprentice to learn the trade
shall be deemed to undertake the duty which he agrees to perform
as a duty enforceable under this award, and shall pay such appren-
tice not less than the undermentioned rates of wages: For the first
year, 5s. per week; for the second year, 10s. per week; for the
third year, 15s. per week; for the fourth year, £1 per week; for
the fifth year, £1 5s. per week.
(b.) The period of apprenticeship shall be five years, but two
months’ probation shall be allowed the first employer to determine
his fitness, such two months to be included in the period of appren-
ticeship. The obligation of the apprentice to serve the employer
shall be a duty enforceable under this award.
