The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 722, against 682 in July—an increase of 40. The deaths in August were 262—a decrease of 6 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 157, females 105. Forty-two of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 16·03 per cent. of the whole number; 34 of these were under one year of age.

There were 113 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 99 in July. The following table shows the classification :—
