Including the suburbs, the rate at Dunedin is the highest, and at Christchurch the lowest.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 677, against 685 in May—a decrease of 8. The deaths in June were 252—an increase of 25 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 141, females 111. Forty-seven of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 18·65 per cent. of the whole number; 36 of these were under one year of age.

There were 107 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 83 in May. The following table shows the classification:—
