The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 685, against 657 in April — an increase of 28. The deaths in May were 227 — an increase of 7 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 111, females 116. Forty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 19·38 per cent. of the whole number; 38 of these were under one year of age.

There were 83 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 71 in April. The following table shows the classification :—
