Re UNCHARTED ROCK OFF TRIO ISLANDS APPROACHING ADMIRALTY BAY, COOK STRAIT.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 13th May, 1912.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 28 of 1912, re the reported uncharted rock off Francis Head, approaching Admiralty Bay, Captain Bollons of the Government steamer “Hinemoa” reports that he has searched for this rock, and took lines of soundings with the vessel and boats, but could not find shallow water or any indication of shallow water in or close to the position stated in the above-mentioned notice. He anchored over this position, and found 32 fathoms grey soft mud.

A rock exists nearer the southern Trio Islands, and about 2¼ miles from Clay Point. This rock dries at low-water springs, and is the outer rock of a ridgy reef which juts out from the southern Trio Islet, several pinnacles of which are dry at low-water springs.

The rock lies 4¼ cables S. 7° E. (true) or S. 23° E. (magnetic) from the south end of the southern Trio.
