No. 31106.—29th March, 1912.—WILLIAM ANDREWS, of Christchurch, New Zealand, Engineer. Improvements in chaffcutters.

Extract from Specification.—Each blade is provided with a back having a vertical flange adapted to fit within the curve of the spoke of the wheel. A horizontal flange integral with the first flange fits upon the face of the spoke. The back is provided with slots which fit upon the necks of bolts passing through the spoke, the axes of the bolts lying in the plane of rotation of the wheel. The backs are turned accurately in the lathe or ground and have a recess or rebate to receive the edge of the blade, which is riveted to the back. This recess is bevelled, and being part of a circle forms part of a cone. The blade secured by rivets in the recess is made to assume the shape of a frustum, or part, of a cone, and is given an angle such as is correct for purposes of chaffcutting.

Extract from Specification.—The invention consists of a standard, which is held in a tube by a cap attached to the standard. Thin metal strips or springs are hinged at one end to the bottom of the standard, and at the other end are hinged to a plunger slidable in the standard. Canvas, leather, or other similar material is attached to the springs so that when the springs are opened out the said material forms a disc. A rod provided with a handle slides in a hole in the cap and upon being pressed causes the plunger to open out the springs until they take the shape of the section of the main, which is thus effectively closed and may be repaired without risk.
