Special Books in Languages and Literature for Class C Certificate and Civil Service Senior Examinations, 1913 and 1914.

IN pursuance of regulations under the Education Act, 1908, and under the Civil Service Act, 1908, notice is hereby given that at the examination for Class C and at the Civil Service Senior Examination of January, 1913, and of January, 1914, the special books of which a knowledge will be required will be as follows :—

ENGLISH.—1913 : Shakspeare, “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet”; Macaulay, “Essay on Milton”; Milton, “Samson Agonistes,” “L’Allegro,” “Il Penseroso,” “Lycidas.” In addition, a knowledge of the period of literature, 1625–1688, will be required. In the study of the literature special attention must be paid to the authors indicated for the year, but the other authors in the period are not to be neglected. The literary movements and their leaders, the current types and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as the influence of the ancient classics and of the leading Continental literatures on the English literature of the period, must also be examined. [NOTE.—In lieu of the period of literature prescribed for 1913, a knowledge of the following special books may be substituted if desired: Scott, “Waverley”; Ruskin, “Sesame and Lilies,” and “The Two Paths.”] 1914: Shakspeare, “Henry IV” (Parts I and II), “Henry V”; Pope, “Essay on Criticism”; Swift, “Battle of the Books”; Steele and Addison, “The Spectator,” The Club Papers as follows—1, 2, 12, 34, 105, 106, 108, 110, 112, 115, 117, 122, 123, 125, 126, 130, 131, 269, 295, 329, 335, 383, 517, 530, 549, 550; “The Vision of Mirza,” 159. In addition, a knowledge of the period of literature, 1688–1744, will be required. In the study of the literature special attention must be paid to Defoe, Steele, Addison, Swift, Pope, and Thomson; but the other authors of the period are not to be neglected. The literary movements and their leaders, the current types and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as the influence of the ancient classics and of the leading Continental literatures on the English literature of the period, must also be examined.

GERMAN.—1913 : Goethe, “Egmont”; Schiller, “Wilhelm Tell”; Heine, “Harzreise.” 1914 : Goethe, “Iphigénie”; Schiller, “Maria Stuart”; Riehl, “Culturgeschichtliche Novellen” (Cambridge University Press).
