Including the suburbs, the rate at Auckland is the highest, and at Wellington and Dunedin the lowest.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 673, against 633 in September—an increase of 40. The deaths in October were 257—a decrease of 5 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 136, females 121. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 21·01 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under one year of age.

There were 89 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 110 in September. The following table shows the classification :—
