OF

WELLINGTON, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1911.

The Census and Statistics Act, 1910.

Registrar-General’s Office,
Wellington, 15th November, 1911.

IN the New Zealand Gazette of the 6th July, 1911, there appeared an interim return showing the areas under corn, pulse, and green crops, compiled from returns collected in connection with the Census in April last. The following figures give the complete returns, including the areas under grasses, &c., also the actual yields of the principal crops.

On the 2nd of April, the date of the Census, the crops for the 1910–11 season were all harvested, but the return requested farmers and others to show the crops, &c., on their land as at the 1st January, 1911. Comparing the grain and green crops with the returns of two years ago, both show a large decrease this year. This can be accounted for by the drought experienced in several parts of the Dominion last summer, and by the increase of dairying and of sheep-farming. The principal decreases are in Canterbury and Otago, where the drought was very severe, and where the turnip and other crops were, in many instances, total failures. In grain crops it will be noticed that, whilst there is an increase in the area under wheat amounting to 83,160 acres, oats, on the other hand, show the very large decrease of 153,324 acres.
