The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 633, against 684 in August—a decrease of 51. The deaths in September were 262—a decrease of 26 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 141, females 121. Thirty-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age being 13·74 per cent. of the whole number; 29 of these were under one year of age.

There were 110 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 120 in August. The following table shows the classification :—
