The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 684, against 660 in July—an increase of 24. The deaths in August were 288—an increase of 1 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 159, females 129. Forty-seven of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 16·32 per cent. of the whole number; 30 of these were under one year of age.

There were 120 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 102 in July. The following table shows the classification:—
