The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, but raises it at Wellington.

Including the suburbs, the rate at Dunedin is the highest, and at Wellington the lowest.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 660, against 603 in June—an increase of 57. The deaths in July were 287—an increase of 72 as compared with last month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 163, females 124. Sixty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 24·04 per cent. of the whole number; 44 of these were under one year of age.

There were 102 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs as against 89 in June. The following table shows the classification :—
