Extract from Specification.—The invention consists in mounting the jaw of the vice upon a spindle extending at its inner end in through the front of the bench and beneath the bench-top and having a stop on its outer end for engagement with the jaw, in a toothed rack rigidly supported longitudinally with spindle, and a helically twisted cam secured upon the spindle and adapted to engage between the teeth of the rack. This cam is made to extend through about half a complete circle, so that when the spindle is turned the cam may free the rack and permit of the spindle sliding in or out to adjust the position of its jaw. Then, when the jaw is adjusted on to an article, by giving a partial rotation to the spindle the cam-edge will be caused to engage with one of the teeth of the rack and, by reason of its helical pitch, to draw the vice-jaw hard in against the article.
