No. 29399.—13th April, 1911.—ALFRED HUDSON and FRANK S. SMITH, both of Te Hopai, Featherston, New Zealand, Flax-cutter and Flax-scutter respectively. Improved apparatus for treating flax.
Extract from Specification.—According hereto, the usual endless chain employed for conveying flax from a stripper is made to carry the flax through a steamer. From this steamer the chain conveys the flax to vertical brushes which revolve in directions opposite to the travel of the conveyor-chain. The brushes are mounted in a casing provided with combs, which remove the vegetable matter from the brushes. The flax is then conveyed through troughs supplied with running water and through other revolving brushes.
[NOTE.—The above extract from the specification is inserted in place of the claims.]

Claims.—(1.) The process of rendering fabrics or materials of animal or vegetable origin suitable for use as separators in electrical batteries or electrolytic apparatus which consists in immersing the material or fabric in an alkaline silicate bath, then in a bath of dilute phosphoric or sulphuric acid, and subsequently coating the fabric with a film of gutta-percha, indiarubber, or celluloid, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

No. 29414.—19th April, 1911.—EDMUND SEAL DONISTHORPE, of 189 Hammersmith Road, London, England, Gentleman. Improvements in or relating to apparatus for synchronizing the working of machinery.
Extracts from Specification.—This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for synchronizing the working of machinery such as bioscopes, kinematographs, or other picture-projecting machines, and phonographs or other talking-machines. . . . According to this invention, a weaker but faster-running machine is associated with a stronger but slower-running machine in such a manner that, when the two machines are in actual working, owing to the tendency of the one machine to overrun the other, a member connected with the former is maintained in close relationship with an engaging-member connected with the latter, and the movements of the faster-running machine are thereby regulated or governed. Assuming the invention to be applied to the working of a kinematograph and phonograph or talking-machine, two members or discs operatively connected with the respective machines are capable of relative angular movement, the disc pertaining to the talking-machine being adapted to overtake, engage, and rotate with the other disc. The disc which is operated by the kinematograph serves to retard the movement of the disc operated by the talking-machine, but should the speed of the kinematograph disc be accelerated, the speed of the other disc will also increase; the arrangement is such that the talking-machine disc is capable of rotating at a speed greater than the maximum speed of the kinematograph disc. The aforesaid machines may be operatively connected to intermediate shafting adapted to transmit motion from one machine to the other, or to actuate or help to actuate or to govern the respective machines.
[NOTE.—The above extracts from the specification are inserted in place of the claims.]
(Specification, 12s. 9d.)
No. 29419.—21st April, 1911.—CLEMENS GRAAFF, of 17 Linkstreet, Berlin, Germany, Merchant. Improvements in methods of and apparatus for extinguishing fires.
Extract from Specification.—The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for extinguishing fires. The method is characterized in a container filled with the extinguishing-fluid, being connected with a pipe conduit, a flexible hose-line, a pipe system, or the like, and placed under gas-pressure in case of a conflagration, thereby forcing the extinguishing-fluid into the pipes, the flexible hose, the pipe system, or the like, so that the said fluid may be drawn from said pipes at suitable points.
