The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 594, against 572 in November—an increase of 22. The deaths in December were 200—an increase of 1 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 112, females 88. Fifty-one of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 25·50 per cent. of the whole number; 44 of these were under one year of age.

There were fifty-seven deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Thirteen men, 65 (two), 68, 70, 73, 74, 76 (two), 77, 78 (two), 84, 89, and eight women, 67, 68, 70, 72 (two), 74, 78, 82, died at Auckland; five men, 65, 66, 70, 76, 83, and five women, 65, 67, 69, 73, 81, at Wellington; five men, 69, 72, 76, 77, 83, and ten women, 72, 73, 75 (two), 77 (three), 79, 80, 86, at Christchurch; and seven men, 70, 74 (two), 75, 80, 83 (two), and four women, 68, 71, 77, 80, at Dunedin.
