Special Books in Languages and Literature for Class C
Certificate and Civil Service Senior Examinations, 1912
and 1913.

IN pursuance of regulations under the Education Act,
1908, and under the Civil Service Act, 1908, notice is
hereby given that at the examination for Class C and at the
Civil Service Senior Examination of January, 1912, and of
January, 1913, the special books of which a knowledge will
be required will be as follows :—
ENGLISH.—1912: George Eliot, “Romola”; Shakspere,
“King Lear,” “The Tempest.” Period—Reign of Elizabeth. [Note.—In lieu of the period of literature prescribed
for 1912, a knowledge of the following special books may
be substituted if desired : Burke, “Thoughts on the Present
Discontents,” “Speeches on American Taxation and on Con-
ciliation with America”; Hamerton, “Human Intercourse.”]
ENGLISH.—1913: Shakspere, “Romeo and Juliet,” “Ham-
let”; Macaulay, “Essay on Milton”; Milton, “Samson
Agonistes,” “L'Allegro,” “Il Penseroso,” “Lycidas.” In
addition, a knowledge of the period of literature, 1625–1688,
will be required. In the study of the literature special
attention must be paid to the authors indicated for the year,
but the other authors in the period are not to be neglected.
The literary movements and their leaders, the current types
and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as
the influence of the ancient classics and of the leading
Continental literatures on the English literature of the
period, must also be examined. [Note.—In lieu of the
period of literature prescribed for 1913, a knowledge of the
following special books may be substituted if desired :
Scott, “Waverley”; Ruskin, “Sesame and Lilies,” and
“The Two Paths.”]
GREEK.—1912: Thucydides, VII; Euripides, “Iphigenia
in Tauris.” 1913: Xenophon, “Cyropaedia,” I and II;
Sophocles, “Oedipus Rex.”
LATIN.—1912: Cicero, “Phillippics,” II; Virgil, “Aeneid,”
IV. 1913: Livy, XXIV; Horace, “Odes” I and II.
FRENCH.—1912: Voltaire, “Charles XII”; Merimée,
“Colomba”; Racine, “Athalie”; Molière, “Le Médecin
Malgré Lui.” 1913: Tocqueville, “Ancien Régime”; Vol-
taire, “Zaïre”; Molière, “Bourgeois Gentilhomme.”
GERMAN.—1912: Goethe, “Hermann und Dorothea”;
Lessing, “Nathan der Weise”; Scheffel, “Ekkehard.”

EXTRAORDINARY VACANCY, SOUTHERN WARD.
IN accordance with section 24 of the Education Act,
1908, it is hereby notified that
JAMES SMITH
has been duly elected a member of the Education Board of
the District of Otago for the Southern Ward, to fill the
vacancy caused by the retirement of Rev. P. B. Fraser.
The number of valid votes recorded for each candidate

The total number of valid votes recorded was 534. The

receipt of the sum of 10s., forwarded to the Resident
Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, by some
person unknown as conscience-money for ironwork taken
from the Public Works Department.

The illuminating-oil in the refined state to have a specific
gravity of 0·814 to 0·830, and a flashpoint of not less than
83° Fahr. by the Abel closed test.
2. Notice of intention to claim the aforesaid bonus must
be given in writing to the Minister of Mines not later
than 31st March, 1912.
3. The claim must be made and the conditions duly
fulfilled on or before the 31st March, 1915.
4. The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of
the Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions
under any of the headings (a), (b), (c), or (d) shall be the
recipient of the bonus payable under that heading. The
oil must in each case be produced from the well or wells
of one proprietary only.
5. All conditions as to quantity, quality, priority, and
value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer ap-
pointed for the purpose by the Government.
6. This offer cancels the offer dated the 1st June, 1909,
and appearing in the New Zealand Gazette.

Notice of the Taking and Laying-off of a Road in Block V
Puniu Survey District, Waitomo County.

NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand,
under the authority of section 93 of the Public Works Act,
1908, that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on
the 1st day of October, 1908, duly taken and laid off through
the land specified in the said Schedule, under the authority
of the Governor of the said Dominion, by Warrant dated the
12th day of September, 1908.
