The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 652, against 594 in December—an increase of 58. The deaths in January were 266—an increase of 66 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 148, females 118. Seventy-three of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 27·44 per cent. of the whole number; 63 of these were under one year of age.

There were seventy-two deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Eight men, 65, 67, 68, 73, 76 (two), 77, 86, and nine women, 69 (two), 74 (two), 75, 79 (two), 80, 83, died at Auckland; seven men, 68, 70, 71, 73 (two), 74 (two), and two women, 69, 74, at Wellington; thirteen men, 65, 66, 70, 71 (two), 73, 74 (two), 75, 78, 80, 84, 90, and ten women, 66 (two), 67, 68 (two), 72, 75, 78, 80, 82, at Christchurch; and twelve men, 67 (two), 70, 74 (three), 75, 76, 79, 85, 95 (two), and eleven women, 65, 68, 71, 73, 74, 77, 79, 82 (two), 83, 86, at Dunedin.
