to be locked and the block instruments therefor put out of use,
and the other set of signals to be freed and the block instru-
ments therefor brought into use, to thus permit the direction
of traffic-working to be changed over, means comprising a
track circuit whereby said electric current cannot be ob-
tained to permit said changing-over of the signalling-devices
should a train or pair of wheels and axle be on the single line.
[NOTE.—Here follow eight other claims.]
(Specification, £1 2s. 6d.)
No. 28544.—5th October, 1910.—JOHANNES CORNELIS VAN
BERKEL, of 42 Stampfenbach-Strasse, Zurich, Switzerland,
Agent. Improvements in meat-slicing machines.
Extract from Specification.—I make the machine with an
inclined or angled table, upon which the meat is fed forward
automatically, and is cut by a rotating circular knife, which is
moved through a curvilinear path so as to cut the meat from
its upper end downwards, the slices as they are severed fall-
ing down and away from the meat. The machine comprises
other novel features of construction as pointed out in the
claims. The rotary knife is so made or arranged, or the
tab’e is so arranged relatively with the knife, that the latter
only comes in contact with the meat at its peripheral edge,
thereby avoiding excessive friction whilst cutting.
[NOTE.—The above extract from the specification is inserted in place
of the claims.]
(Specification, 6s. 9d.)
No. 28545.—5th October, 1910.—ALEXANDER PAAL, Printer,
of Osnabruck, Germany, whose post-office address is Osna-
bruck, Germany. Apparatus for baling paper and the like
cuttings.
Claims.—(1.) In apparatus for baling paper or the like cut-
tings, the combination of a press-receptacle, a standard
thereon, a press-plate above said receptacle, an arm to carry
said press-plate, and means to turn said arm with the plate
thereon away from above the receptacle, for the purpose
set forth. (2.) In apparatus for baling paper or the like
cuttings, the combination of a press-receptacle, a detachable
front wall for the same, a press-plate arranged above said
receptacle and adapted to be raised or lowered, and a belt
fixed at the middle of the front edge of the bottom of the
receptacle and arranged to lead through the latter to the rear,
and with its free end designed, upon the press-plate being
raised, to be fixed to the same, for the purpose set forth.
(Specification, 3s.)
No. 28550.—6th October, 1910.—ALFRED VINCENT, of 8
Golden Grove Street, Redfern, Sydney, and CHARLES MUIR, of
82 Rosehill Street, Redfern, Sydney, both in the State of New
South Wales, Australia, Engineers. Improved door for fur-
naces.
Extract from Specification.—An air-heating chamber posi-
tioned within the furnace and integral with the back of the
door, said chamber communicating with the furnace through
apertures in the rear vertical side, and with the atmosphere
through vertical T bars positioned to form a series of angular
air-passages, a wire-gauze partition contained within said
chamber, and louvres in the front of the furnace-door. The
wire-gauze partition being positioned adjacent to the louvered
face of the door and the T bars in the rear of the chamber, the
air admitted through said louvres is evenly distributed and
heated within the chamber, and passing thence to the furnace
above the firebars.

the claims.]
(Specification, 3s.)
No. 28551.—6th October, 1910.—EDWIN PHILLIPS, Patent

damped electrical oscillations by the shock excitation method.
Claims.—(1.) An arrangement of connections for producing
but slightly damped oscillations by the shock excitation
method, comprising a shock circuit containing several spark-
gaps coupled with a slightly damped secondary circuit tuned
thereto, in which some of the spark-gaps are so arranged that
they do not limit the potential to which the condenser can be
charged.
[NOTE.—Here follow two other claims.]
