Description of Runs.

Runs Nos. 501, 502, and 514 are all high broken country,
ranging from 600 ft. to 1,500 ft. above sea-level. The western
side of the Main Island forms an almost unbroken line of
precipitous cliffs about 1,400 ft. high, but which sink to
a much lower elevation in the north of the group. The
eastern side is cut up into many deep inlets, forming excel-
lent harbours, some of them advancing to within a few miles
of the western coast. The whole island is hilly. The lower
part of the island, especially on the eastern side, is mainly
covered with forest; the upper portion is composed of open
meadow or tussock. A Government steamer makes periodical
visits to the depots which have been established on the
islands for shipwrecked sailors.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned
pastoral runs will be offered for license by public
auction at this office at 11 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday,
the 26th day of October, 1910, under the provisions of the
Land Act, 1908.

SCHEDULE.
MARLBOROUGH LAND DISTRICT.
Class A.

Run No. Area. Term. Upset Annual Rent.
A. R. P. £ s. d.

MARLBOROUGH COUNTY.—ONAMALUTU AND CLOUDY BAY SURVEY DISTRICTS.

| 134 | 1,407 0 0 | 21 years | 25 0 0 |

Situated to the north side of Kaituna Valley, about
sixteen miles by good road from Blenheim, and varies in
altitude from 200 ft. to 2,000 ft. It consists of hillsides
of inferior to fairly good quality, and upon which the
native grasses are increasing. It is covered generally on
the south with short manuka and fern, with a sprinkling
of flax and scrub, and on the north generally with fern
and patches of bush in the gullies; fairly well watered.
The run is fenced only along portions of the boundary,
and, as in addition to partly adjoining it is also inter-
sected by freehold land, there is an expensive contingent
liability in regard to the balance of the fencing.

| 135 | 1,768 0 0 | 21 years | 50 0 0 |

Situated on south side of Kennington's Creek, about
eighteen miles from Blenheim. Access from Waikakaho
Valley. Clayey soil; good warm aspect; covered gene-
rally with light scrub and fern, with patches of native
grasses. Altitude, from 200 ft. to 2,500 ft.

MARLBOROUGH COUNTY.—LINKWATER SURVEY DISTRICT.

| 160 | 879 0 0 | 21 years | 8 0 0 |

Clay soil; broken country; originally covered with
birch bush and mixed forest, the greater portion of which
has been burnt. Distant about seven miles from Havelock.
Altitude, from 200 ft. to 2,000 ft. above sea-level.

SOUNDS COUNTY.—GORE SURVEY DISTRICT.

| 94 | 1,590 0 0 | 21 years | 160 0 0 |

Known as the Cape Jackson Run; all hill country, most
of which is covered by kohikohi and other light bush and
scrub, mixed with a dense growth of kiekie in places.
The soil is fairly good, and good healthy sheep-country,
and will carry grass well. The north-western end is high
and rough, but there is a fair proportion of native and
exotic grasses towards the Cape where the scrub has been
burnt off. Altitude from sea-level to about 900 ft. There
is little or no flat land. The access is by sea; landing
can generally be effected in calm weather, or on the lee
side in almost any weather.

KAIKOURA COUNTY.—GREENBURN SURVEY DISTRICT.

| 127 | 12,300 0 0 | 10 years | 150 0 0 |

Situated about twelve miles from the Town of Kaikoura,
at the back of the Lynton Downs freehold; high broken
country, extending to the summit of the Inland Kaikoura
Range. It is accessible up the Crib Creek.

Possession of Run 127 will be given on the 1st March,
1911; the remainder on the day of sale.

F. STEPHENSON SMITH,
Commissioner of Crown Lands.
