The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 593, against 651 in August—a decrease of 58. The deaths in September were 221—a decrease of 85 on the number in August. Of the total deaths, males contributed 118, females 103. Forty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 21·72 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under one year of age.
There were seventy-two deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Eight men, 65, 75, 76 (three), 77, 82, 84, and five women, 65, 73, 79, 83, 84, died at Auckland; eight men, 66 (three), 68, 69, 72, 80, 82, and five women, 65, 67, 73, 79, 85, at Wellington; twelve men, 66 (two), 68, 69, 70, 74, 76, 78, 81, 82, 83, 84, and fourteen women, 65, 66, 68 (two), 71, 77, 78 (two), 80, 82, 84 (two), 87, 88 at Christchurch; and thirteen men, 66, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77 (two), 80 (two), 83, and seven women, 65, 74, 75, 79, 80, 85, 88, at Dunedin.
