The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 651, against 590 in July—an increase of 61. The deaths in August were 306—an increase of 65 on the number in July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 157, females 149. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 17·65 per cent. of the whole number; 41 of these were under one year of age.
There were one hundred and twenty-six deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Seventeen men, 66 (three), 68 (two), 69, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77 (two), 79, 82, 83, 84, and six women, 71, 72, 73, 79 (two), 81, died at Auckland; seventeen men, 65, 67, 68 (two), 69, 70, 75 (two), 76 (two), 77 (three), 81, 86, 90, 91, and fifteen women, 65, 67, 69, 70 (two), 74, 76 (two), 77, 78, 79, 82, 83, 84, 92, at Wellington; eighteen men, 67 (two), 68, 72 (two), 75, 76 (three), 77, 78 (two), 79, 82, 83, 84, 86, 89, and twenty-four women, 65, 66, 68 (three), 69 (three), 71, 75 (two), 77, 78 (two), 79 (two), 80, 81, 82, 84, 85 (two), 89, 93, at Christchurch; and twenty men, 65, 67 (two), 68, 70 (three), 71, 74 (two), 76, 77, 78, 80 (three), 81, 86 (two), 88, and nine women, 68, 69, 71, 75, 77, 79, 82, 86, 91, at Dunedin.
