The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 583, against 620 in April—a decrease of 37. The deaths in April were 204—a decrease of 53 on the number in April. Of the total deaths, males contributed 112, females 92. Fifty-two of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 25·49 per cent. of the whole number; 39 of these were under one year of age.
There were seventy-two deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Ten men, 67, 70, 71, 74, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 88, and nine women, 66, 68, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 84, 85, died at Auckland; five men, 65 (two), 68, 69, 73, and five women, 69, 70, 71, 77, 85, at Wellington; fifteen men, 65, 67, 68, 69, 70, 72, 74, 75, 76 (two), 77, 78, 79, 82, 87, and 13 women, 67, 70, 72, 73 (two), 78 (three), 81 (two), 82, 84, 89, at Christchurch; and ten men, 72 (two), 74 (two), 76, 77, 78, 84, 85 (two), and five men, 69, 71, 75, 76, 79, at Dunedin.
