The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 640, against 576 in November—an increase of 64. The deaths in December were 241—an increase of 61 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 147, females 94. Sixty-two of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 25·73 per cent. of the whole number; 47 of these were under one year of age.

There were sixty-one deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: ten men, 65, 66, 68 (two), 70, 73, 74, 77, 79, 87, and five women, 65, 71, 72, 73, 74, died at Auckland; seven men, 68, 69, 70, 72, 75, 78 (two), and four women, 65, 69, 71, 83, at Wellington; sixteen men, 65, 66 (two), 68 (three), 70, 73, 75 (two), 77 (two), 79, 80 (two), 88, and two women, 75, 80, at Christchurch; and eleven men, 65, 67, 68, 73, 75, 77, 78 (two), 80, 81, 90, and six women, 65, 66, 67, 70, 74, 79, at Dunedin.
