Notices of Requests to amend Specifications.

R EQUESTS for leave to amend the undermentioned applications for Letters Patent have been received, and are open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time from one month from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing of opposition to the amendments. Such notice must set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be in duplicate. A fee of 10s. is payable thereon.

No. 24821.—20th August, 1908.—W. H. McGeever. Staff working of railways. (Advertised in Supplement to New Zealand Gazette, No. 59, of the 15th July, 1909.)

The nature of the proposed amendments is as follows:—
(1.) To alter “system” to “systems,” line 6, page 2.
(2.) To strike out the words “preferably in the form of a flat ring,” lines 27 and 28, page 2; to alter “light” to “suitable,” line 28, page 2; to alter “material” to “materials,” line 28, page 2; and to insert after “material,” line 28, page 2, the words “or combination of materials.”
(3.) To alter “either” to “both,” line 32, page 2.
(4.) To strike out the words “and any other instruction” down to “necessary,” lines 1, 2, 3, and 4, page 3, and to insert instead “any other message or instruction may be indicated on the staff or on simple means removably attached to the staff.”
(5.) To strike out the word “in,” line 21, page 3; and to insert after “which,” line 21, page 3, the following words: “illustrate two forms of staff and staves.”
(6.) To strike out the words “preferably in the form of a flat ring although it may,” line 35, page 3, and the words “be of any other suitable shape” down to “or leather,” lines 1, 2, and 3, page 4, and to insert instead “of suitable shape such as in the form of a ring or oval or approximating thereto. It may be made of any material or combination of materials that will suit the purpose—viz., that which while light will not be knocked about by rough usage. For this purpose I may employ rubber, leather, thin sheet tin, brass or copper, wire, or suchlike.”
(7.) To insert the words “or indicated” after “marked,” line 4, page 4.
(8.) To insert “improper” before “removal,” line 28, page 4; to strike out “by the engine-driver,” line 28, page 4; and to substitute “the” for “these,” line 28, page 4.
(9.) After the word “numbered,” line 31, page 4, to insert “When straps and buckles are not used this information should be embodied on the respective sides of the staff.”
(10.) To substitute “may be” for “are,” line 32, page 4; “need” for “are,” line 34, page 4; and to insert “be” after “not,” line 4, page 4.
(11.) After the word “readily,” line 12, page 5, to insert “Receptacles (fitted with lock and key) may be provided at the end of each section, and in the staff, staves, &c., may be placed.”
(12.) To insert the words “or padlocks alone” after “locks,” line 16, page 5.
(13.) To insert “one of several” instead of “an,” and “methods” instead of “method,” line 6, page 7, and “both sides” instead of “either side,” line 26, page 7.

The applicant states, “My reasons for making this amendment are as follow: To remove any ambiguity that may exist as to the material of which the invention is constructed,
