The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 631, against 640 in December—a decrease of 9. The deaths in January were 227—a decrease of 14 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 119, females 108. Sixty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 30·40 per cent. of the whole number; 61 of these were under one year of age.
There were sixty deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Eight men, 65, 75, 77 (two), 79 (two), 85, 88, and five women, 65, 67 (two), 72, 75, died at Auckland; four men, 65, 69, 75, 82, and four women, 70 (two), 73, 80, at Wellington; nine men, 66, 68, 72, 73 (two), 75 (two), 77, 86, and thirteen women, 66, 67 (two), 68, 74 (two), 78, 81 (three), 82, 83, 94, at Christchurch; and ten men, 67, 73 (three), 75, 76 (two), 79, 81, 85, and seven women, 68 (two), 70, 74, 75, 76, 79, at Dunedin.
