No. 28807.—7th December, 1909.†—WOLDEMAR HOMMEL, Ph.D., and HENRY THOMAS DURANT, both of Finsbury House, Blomfield Street, London, England, Metallurgists. Improvements in or relating to the extraction of metals from their ores.
Extract from Specification.—More particularly this invention consists in subjecting a mixture of the roasted ore and water to the action of sulphurous-acid gas escaping from the ore-roasting furnace and previously cooled, collecting the sulphite solution of zinc or copper thus formed and submitting it to the action of the hot gases from the roasting-furnace with or without other applied heat, the furnace-gases being thereby cooled and enriched by the addition of the sulphurous acid driven off from the sulphite solutions and zinc-monosulphite or an insoluble sulphite compound of copper being precipitated. This invention also has reference to apparatus for carrying out the above or other processes in which a cold gas is brought into contact with a flowing mixture consisting of a mixture of ore and water to effect a solution, after which the liquid solution is treated with hot gases to effect a precipitation. The apparatus comprises a roasting-furnace, a precipitating-tower communicating therewith in which the sulphite solution is subjected to the action of the escaping hot gases from the roasting-furnace, auxiliary heating-means for the precipitating-tower, if necessary, and the extraction-tower communicating with the precipitating-tower wherein the cooled gases are caused to act upon a mixture of ore and water passing through the extraction-tower.
[NOTE.—The above extract from the specification is inserted in place of the claims.]
