Notice to Mariners No. 90 of 1909.

TIDAL-STREAM OBSERVATIONS IN COOK STRAIT.

COMMANDER R. A. Edwin, R.N., late Director of the New Zealand Meteorological Office, reports that at 10 a.m. on 4th September, 1909, when steaming alongside the cable-buoy in the New Zealand Government s.s. “Tutanekai,” the flood-stream was found to be running at 5½ knots per hour by patent log. This was two hours and a half after H.W. at Wellington. The rate is somewhat in excess of that given on the Admiralty charts and in the “New Zealand Pilot.”

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

Wollongong Light: Dark Sector over Bellambi Reef altered to Red.

On and after the night of the 1st November, 1909, the dark screen which now cuts off the light over Bellambi Reef will be replaced by a red one; and the light will show red when seen on a bearing of S. 27° W. (magnetic), and from westward thereof.

Preliminary Notice to Mariners No. 95 of 1909.

LIGHTHOUSE AT CAPE BRETT.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 11th November, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that a lighthouse is being erected on Cape Brett, the south-eastern point of the Bay of Islands, in latitude 35° 11′ S. and longitude 174° 21′ E. (approximate). The light is to be a first-order white group-flashing one, with two flashes in quick succession every half-minute.

The focal plane of the light will be 510 ft. above H.W., and it should be visible, except when obscured by the land, over an arc of 240° for a distance of thirty miles. It is expected that the light will be exhibited by about the middle of February, 1910, but a further Notice to Mariners giving the exact date will be issued later on.

Notice to Mariners No. 96 of 1909.

TIMARU HARBOUR LIGHTS.

THE Timaru Harbour Board has notified that the arc of visibility of the harbour-mole and eastern-breakwater lights has been altered as follows: The north-mole light shows from S. 45° E. round by south to N. 45° E. over an arc of 270°, and the eastern-breakwater light shows from S. 73° W. round by south to N. 2° W. over an arc of 255°.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

North-west Coast.—King Sound.

It is hereby notified that an uncharted rock, with 12 ft. of water over it at low water, springs, has been discovered by H.M.S. “Fantome” in fairway of Sunday Strait, with east point of Eastern Roe Island bearing north 83° 30′ west, distance 13 cables (lat. 16° 21′ 30″ south, long. 123° 15′ east).

Charts affected: No. 1052, Hall Point to Cape Bertholet, including King Sound; No. 1048, Buccaneer Archipelago to Bedout.
