of the Education Department, and whose attendance at school during the previous year is considered by the Inspector of Native Schools to have been satisfactory. The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Native Schools Code, 1908. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 6th and 7th of December, 1909.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as to reach the Department not later than the 26th of October, 1909.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary for Education, Wellington.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF LEASE.
- Possession will be given on the day of the sale.
- The rent shall be payable half-yearly in advance, free from all deductions whatsoever, on the 1st January and 1st July in each year: to the first payment shall be added the rent for the broken period between the date of the sale and the 1st day of January following.
- The lease shall be for a term of fourteen years from the date of the sale, but subject to termination by twelve months’ notice in the event of the land being required by the Government.
- The lessee shall have no right to compensation, either for improvements he has put upon the land, or on account of the aforesaid resumption, or for any other cause; but he may, on the expiration or sooner determination of the lease, remove all buildings and fences erected by him, but not otherwise.
- The lessee shall not sublet, transfer, or otherwise dispose of his interest in the land comprised in his lease, except with the written consent of the Commissioner of Crown Lands first had and obtained.
- The land shall not be cropped or broken up except with the consent of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
- The lessee shall destroy all rabbits on the land, and he shall prevent their increase or spread, to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
- The lessee shall prevent the growth and spread of gorse, broom, sweetbriar, or other noxious weeds on the land comprised in the lease, and he shall with all reasonable des-
