No. 25207.—10th November, 1908.—FREDERICK STUBBS, of Clonbern Road, Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand, Boiler-maker. An improved draw-off pipe apparatus, more particularly applicable to household hot-water services of the low-pressure type.*

Extract from Specification.—According hereto the draw-off pipe from the hot-water cistern is provided with a pivoted length of pipe, the free end of which is furnished with a float.

No. 25217.—10th November, 1908.—HENRY BUTTERWORTH, of Brighton Road, Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand, Contractor. An improved composition or material for flooring, road-making, and other like purposes, and method of manufacturing the same.*

Claims.—(1.) The improved composition or material specified, consisting, in combination, of tar in the proportion of fifty gallons and of resin in the proportion of twenty pounds avoirdupois weight boiled to a liquid for about from ten to twelve hours together, with the addition thereto after such boiling of two parts of sand to one of said liquid, in the manner and for the purpose set forth, as described.

No. 25218.—10th November, 1908.—THOMAS ROGERS CLOW, of Papatoitoi, Auckland, New Zealand, Engineer. An improved windmill for raising water.*

Claims.—(1.) In the improved windmill for pumping water, the same consisting, in combination, of a disc revolved by sails, the disc being connected to a rocking-bar by means of a connecting-rod, the rocking-bar being fulcrumed to a bracket, and having a pump-rod attached thereto, and means for adjusting length of stroke; a vane-rod being secured by means of a stay-pin to a projection from the main bracket, and linked to a lever fitted with a weight, said vane-rod having a chain or cord attached thereto, said chain or cord running over pulleys and down to a winch through the centre of main bracket, for the purpose set forth, as described and illustrated.

No. 25242.—16th November, 1908.—WILLIAM BORLASE, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Engineer. Improved variable-speed gear for motor cycles and the like.*

Claims.—(1.) In variable-speed gear for motor cycles and the like, in combination, an expanding pulley, a belt driven by said expanding pulley, a pulley driven by said belt, and means for expanding and contracting said expanding pulley and simultaneously effecting the necessary adjustment of said belt without employing cog-wheels, springs, or clutches, substantially as described. (2.) In variable-speed gear for motor cycles and the like, in combination, an externally threaded cylindrical member, a coned disc provided with a sleeve journalled in ball bearings within said member, a cap internally threaded to mesh with said member, a second coned disc forming with said first disc a pulley, a squared spindle secured to said second coned disc and slidably disposed within said sleeve and having its free end revolvable in the end of said cap, substantially as described. (3.) Improved variable-speed gear for motor cycles and the like, consisting of the parts combined, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as described or illustrated in the drawings.

No. 25276.—27th November, 1908.—DANIEL MOORE BROOKS, of 2 Harbour View, Wellington, New Zealand, Engineer. An improved tide-operated apparatus for compressing air.*

Extract from Specification.—According hereto, a float, divided into compartments for containing compressed air and a multiplicity of air-pumps, is placed in a dock of sufficient capacity to allow water to surround the float.

No. 25326.—11th December, 1908.—DONALD FRASER, of 369 Jackson Street, Petone, New Zealand, Carpenter and Builder. Improvements in gig-saws.*

Claims.—(1.) For the purpose indicated, pinions slidably mounted upon the guide-bars which connect the two ends of the saw, said guide-bars being of round section and adapted to rotate with the pinions, racks gearing with the said pinions, means whereby movement of one pinion will be communicated to the other, and means for operating the said mechanism to rock or rotate the saw, substantially as set forth.

No. 25330.—9th December, 1908.—ALOYSIUS WILLIAM BARNES CORRY, of Napier, New Zealand, Carpenter, and CHARLES HENRY ALLEY, of Farndon, New Zealand, Cooper. Improved nail-punch.*

Claim.—A nail-punch formed so that it can be withdrawn by a claw-hammer or similar implement, substantially as and in the manner described.

No. 25419.—7th January, 1909.—THOMAS HARRY GILLMAN, Architect, and LEONARD GRIFFITH GRACE, Agent, both of Hawera, New Zealand. Improved vacuum-producing apparatus.*

Claims.—(1.) In apparatus for the purpose indicated, the employment in combination of the pipe, and independent valve for opening and closing its upper end, and means for lifting said valve from its seat, substantially as specified and illustrated. (2.) In apparatus for the purpose indicated, the combination of the water-trough, the pipe, the valve for closing the upper end of the pipe, the spring means for lifting the valve, the vacuum-pipe, and non-return valve as specified. (3.) In apparatus for the purpose indicated, the means for lifting the valve from its seat and permitting it to close thereon under the influence of a rush of water, substantially as specified. (4.) For the purpose indicated, the parts constructed, arranged, combined, and operating substantially as specified, and illustrated in the drawing.

No. 25457.—16th January, 1909.—HYDROCARBON CONVERTER COMPANY, of 37 Wall Street, New York, United States of America (assignees of Elijah B. Benham, of New London, Connecticut, United States of America, and Godfrey M. S. Tait, of Montclair, New Jersey, United States of America, Inventors). Method and apparatus of vaporising or gasifying hydrocarbon liquids.

Claims.—(1.) The process of producing gas from hydrocarbon oils such as specified, which comprises passing such oil, or the vapour thereof, through the pores of a heated porous body or substance of the nature described, such body or substance being in either solid or granular or pulverulent condition, and being maintained at an effective temperature for forming gas, substantially as described. . . (7.) Apparatus for making gas from hydrocarbon oils and the like, comprising a porous body of decomposing material, substantially as specified, in combination with means for heating the same to an extent such that it is effective for gas-formation as described, and with means for passing through such material oil or the vapour thereof, as set forth.
