The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 622, against 640 in July—a decrease of 18. The deaths in August were 203—a decrease of 52 on the number in July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 102, females 101. Forty-two of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20·69 per cent. of the whole number; 35 of these were under one year of age.

There were seventy-five deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Nine men, 65, 69, 75 (two), 79, 82, 83 (two), 87, and eight women, 66, 67, 71 (two), 74, 78, 81, 88, died at Auckland; two men, 66, 79, and four women, 67, 71, 87, 89, at Wellington; thirteen men, 65 (two), 68, 71, 74, 75, 79, 81 (two), 82, 89, 90, 92, and nineteen women, 66 (three), 67, 68, 69 (two), 70, 72 (two), 76 (two), 78 (two), 80, 84, 85, 89, 92, at Christchurch; and ten men, 68, 69, 71, 72, 74, 76, 78, 79, 87, 89, and ten women, 66 (two) 69, 71, 73, 74, 75, 79, 82, 86, at Dunedin.
