No. 24932.—17th September, 1908.—UNITED SHOE MACHINERY COMPANY, of Paterson, in the State of New Jersey,
United States of America, a corporation duly organized
under the laws of the said State of New Jersey, carrying on
business as Shoe Machinery Manufacturers, and having a
place of business at 205 Lincoln Street, Boston, Massachusetts,
United States of America (assignees of Andrew Eppler, of
4l Aldie Street, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts aforesaid,
Inventor). Improvements in or relating to sewing-machines.*

Claims.—(1.) In a chain-stitch shoe-sewing machine having,
in combination, a needle, looper, thread-finger, take-up,
and auxiliary take-up, the provision of means for preventing
the auxiliary take-up from acting during (a) the first part
of the retracting stroke of the needle, or (b) the time the
thread-finger is giving up thread to the needle, or (c) a portion
of the cycle of operation while the take-up still has capacity
for movement to give up thread. (2.) In a chain-stitch
shoe-sewing machine having, in combination, a curved hook
needle, a looper, a thread-finger, a take-up, and a spring-
actuated auxiliary take-up, the employment of a relatively
fixed stop for limiting the thread-pulling action of the auxiliary
take-up, and means for actuating the parts, all timed
and arranged to prevent the auxiliary take-up from stealing
thread from the thread-finger during its thread-delivering
stroke.

[NOTE.—Here follow twenty-one other claims.]

(Specification, £1 15s.)

No. 24943.—17th September, 1908.—ROBERT McGAFFIN, of Hastings, New Zealand, Contractor. Improved means
and apparatus for catching flax leaves or fibre from flax-
strippers, and for placing such leaves or fibre on the apparatus
used in conveying the same on to and over the water scutcher
or washing-machine.*

Extract from Specification.—The action of my said invention
is as follows : The catching-wheel a is caused to revolve
in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 by means of the
worm and pinion Cl and Bl respectively. As the wheel
revolves the aforesaid rollers bb1 bb2, bb3, bb4, bb5, and bb6,
on the follower-arms b1, b2, b3, b4, b5, and b6, follow round
the guides e1, e2. As each roller approaches the point D
and follows the cam-like outline of the said guides the follower-arm
carrying it is caused to move outwards in the arc
of a circle and so turn the axis on which it is mounted, thereby
causing the catching-arm keyed to that axis to move outwards
in the arc of a circle till it assumes the position of the
arm c1. The said wheel revolving still further and the roller
following the said guides causes the follower-arm carrying
it to again move in the arc of a circle till thereby the catching-
arm keyed to the axis on which that follower-arm is mounted
is closed against the periphery of the catching-wheel. As
the said wheel revolves yet further and the roller in question
approaches the point E the operation aforesaid is repeated,
and so on with that and every one of the said rollers
and follower-arms as they come and again come towards the
points D and E respectively in the successive revolutions of
the catching-wheel. In this manner the flax-leaves falling at
or near the point D are caught and held by the catching-arms,
are carried to the point E, and are there dropped on to the
travelling-web.

[NOTE.—The above extract from the specification is inserted in place
of the claims.]
