PORT OF GEELONG.—HOPETOUN CHANNEL.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 58 of 1908, masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby notified that the dredger “Thomas Bent” has been removed from the Hopetoun Channel, and has commenced dredging alongside of the piers, and will exhibit the usual signals to indicate upon which side vessels may pass by day and night, when not moored alongside of a pier.

Notice to Mariners No. 6 of 1909.

REFERRING to Notices to Mariners No. 99 of 1908 and No. 2 of 1909, the following further Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Port Adelaide, South Australia, is published for general information.

KANGAROO ISLAND.—BACKSTAIRS PASSAGE.

Lights at Capes Willoughby and St. Albans.

REFERRING to Notices to Mariners 28 and 31 of 1908, masters of vessels and others are hereby informed that in about fourteen days’ time a red light will be exhibited from the lower part of the tower of Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, showing over the Scraper Shoal from about south by west until shut in by the high land of Cape St. Albans; and that in all probability the unwatched light at Cape St. Albans will be changed to a fixed white light, showing from east-south-east around by east to north until obscured by Cape Willoughby, but as to this a further notice will be issued. This affects Admiralty Charts 2389B, 1014, and 25.

Notice to Mariners No. 7 of 1909.


“NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC.” — CORRECTION TO PAGES 209 AND 210 re GREYMOUTH HARBOUR LIGHTS.

UNDER the heading of “Greymouth Harbour Lights,” on pages 209 and 210 of the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” the last four lines on page 209 and the first eight lines on page 210 (except the caution not to cross when another vessel is on it) should be deleted, and the information on page 312 of the Almanac re Grey River night signals must be substituted. Through an oversight these lines were printed in error.

New Zealand Government Railways.—By-laws regulating the Traffic over the Matapuna Railway-bridge.


IN exercise and pursuance of the powers conferred by “The Government Railways Act, 1908,” I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Railways, do hereby make the by-laws set out in the Schedule hereto for regulating the traffic on and over the Matapuna Railway-bridge, which said bridge forms part of the railway between Auckland and Wellington, and is used for both ordinary and railway traffic. And I do hereby declare that such by-laws shall come into force from the date of publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette.

SCHEDULE.

BY-LAWS.

(1.) Horses not driven in harness or led by bridle or halter, and cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, mules, and donkeys, must have a man behind them; and cattle, sheep, and horses in mobs must also have a man before them.

(2.) Horses or light-wheeled vehicles shall not enter upon the bridge within fifteen minutes of the time that any train is due on the bridge, drays within twenty minutes, and cattle, sheep, or pigs within thirty minutes.

(3.) Horsemen or wheeled vehicles shall not travel faster than at the rate of six miles an hour.

(4.) Traction-engines shall not cross the bridge unless loaded on railway-wagons.

(5.) Portable engines, combines, elevators, reapers-and-binders (excepting reapers-and-binders on special travelling carriages), and such travelling or portable machines or loads, which exceed 11 ft. in width (all of which are hereinafter included in the term “machine”) may only be taken over the bridge subject to the following conditions:—

(a.) The owner or person in charge thereof shall obtain from the Railway Stationmaster at Taumarunui or Ohakune a permit authorising the passage of the machine over the bridge, accompanied by the bridge-keeper.

(b.) Before such permit is issued, the person applying for the same shall state correctly the description, weight, number of wheels, breadth of tires, and width of the machine or load, together with the name and address of the owner thereof, which particulars shall be entered in the permit.

(c.) The permit is to be given to the bridge-keeper, and the machine shall not enter upon the bridge if the description in the permit does not agree with the machine, nor unless accompanied by the bridge-keeper.

(d.) Every precaution shall be taken against fire or other damage to the bridge or railway, as required by the bridge-keeper, and speed shall be a uniform rate not exceeding two miles an hour.

(e.) The owner of any machine shall be liable to the Minister for any damage done to the bridge or railway during transit of such machine.

(6.) No load shall be taken over the bridge greater than 1½ tons gross per wheel, except with tires 5 in. broad or wider, and no load over 2 tons per wheel shall pass over, except under the regulations for machines; and loads greater than 4 tons per wheel are entirely prohibited from passing over the bridge.

(7.) No person shall go upon or cross the bridge while in a state of intoxication.

(8.) Any person who shall commit a breach of any of the foregoing by-laws, or shall fail to do any act in any such by-law directed to be done by him, or shall do any act which by any such by-law is directed not to be done by him shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £10 for each such breach, or the failure to do or the doing of each such act as aforesaid respectively; but if any such person is employed on or about the railway, and the by-law relates to his conduct, he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £1 for each breach, failure, or act respectively.


Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.


IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under “The Government Railways Act, 1908,” I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 1st day of February, 1909:—

PART I.—PASSENGERS.

FREE SCHOOL SEASON TICKETS.

Cancel—

Regulation 31.

Insert—

  1. Free second-class quarterly tickets, available for distances not exceeding sixty miles, may be issued to school pupils not over nineteen years of age as follows:—

(1.) To pupils attending the public primary schools, from railway-stations where there is no primary school in the vicinity, and only to the station in the vicinity of the nearest primary school.

(2.) To pupils who are holders of scholarships tenable at a district high school or secondary school, as defined by “The Education Act, 1908,” to enable them to attend any such district high school or secondary school.

(3.) To pupils of secondary schools, as defined by “The Education Act, 1908,” and of the secondary departments of district high schools, to enable them to attend one or other of such schools, whichever shall be nearest.

(4.) To pupils attending private primary or secondary schools subject to inspection in accordance with section 170 of “The Education Act, 1908.”
