No. 24058.—30th April, 1908.—HILARY QUERTIER, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Engineer. Improvements in umbrellas, parasols, sunshades, and the like.*

Extract from Specification.—This device consists of a stick or handle of the article carrying the ribs and the frame being made tubular, and the tip or point of the stick being made to fit slidably within it, the tip having a ring or collar a short distance from its outer extremity, whereby it may be easily withdrawn, and at the same time preventing it being forced within the tube. Near the inner extremity of the tip a spring catch similar to those used in the ordinary umbrella is attached and made to engage in a slit or slits at various distances apart in the upper extremity of the main tubular stick for the purpose of enabling this portion to be shortened or lengthened at will. The lower part of the stick, carrying the knob or handle, is made to fit slidably over the lower extremity of the portion carrying the ribs and frame, and having one or more slits cut in its lower extremity at various distances
