The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 645, against 570 in November—an increase of 75. The deaths in December were 230, an increase of 48 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 128, females 102. Fifty-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 24·35 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under one year of age.

There were seventy-five deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards : Fifteen men, 65 (two), 66, 67, 69, 71 (three), 72 (two), 75, 79, 81, 92, 93, and nine women, 65, 67 (two), 68, 70, 74, 75, 76, 84, died at Auckland ; ten men, 65, 67 (two), 73 (two), 74, 76 (two), 81, 82, and five women, 68, 72 (two), 77, 79, at Wellington ; nine men, 65 (two), 70, 71, 75, 78, 79 (two), 80, and seven women, 67 (two), 71, 72, 75, 78 (two), at Christchurch ; and fifteen men, 65, 66, 67, 71, 72, 73, 75, 77, 80, 81 (two), 83, 86 (two), 92, and five women, 65, 71, 72, 77, 91, at Dunedin.
