The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 686, against 639 in April—an increase of 47. The deaths in May were 208, the same number as in April. Of the total deaths, males contributed 108, females 100. Fifty-one of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 24·52 per cent. of the whole number; 44 of these were under one year of age.

There were seventy-three deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Eight men, 67, 69, 70 (two), 73, 77, 84, 89, and five women, 65, 66, 75, 80, 87, died at Auckland; nine men, 65, 69, 70, 75 (two), 78 (two), 80, 81, and six women, 65, 66, 70, 71, 78, 83, at Wellington; six men, 69, 76, 79 (two), 81, 84, and ten women, 65 (two), 66, 68, 69, 71, 74, 76, 80, 84, at Christchurch; and eighteen men, 67, 68 (two), 72 (two), 74, 75 (four), 76 (two), 77 (two), 81, 83, 86 (two), and eleven women, 66 (two), 67 (two), 68, 69, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, at Dunedin.
