Traffic Regulations for Bridges




(1.) Horses not driven in harness or led by bridle or halter, and cattle,\nsheep, pigs, goats, mules, and donkeys, must have a man behind them;\nand cattle, sheep, and horses in mobs must also have a man before them.\n(2.) Foot-passengers, horses, or light wheeled vehicles will not be allowed\nto enter upon the bridge within ten minutes of the time that any train is due\non the bridge, drays within fifteen minutes, and cattle, sheep, or pigs within\ntwenty minutes.\n(3.) Horsemen or wheeled vehicles shall not travel faster than at the\nrate of six miles an hour.\n(4.) Traction-engines shall not cross the bridge unless loaded on railway-\nwagons.\n(5.) Portable engines, combines, elevators, reapers-and-binders (except-\ning reapers-and-binders on special travelling-carriages), and such travelling\nor portable machines or loads which exceed 11 ft. in width (all of which\nare hereinafter included in the term "machine") may only be taken over\nthe bridge subject to the following conditions :—\n(a.) The owner or person in charge thereof shall obtain from the\nRailway Stationmaster at Halcombe or Greatford a permit\nauthorising the passage of the machine over the bridge, ac-\ncompanied by the bridge-keeper.\n(b.) Before such permit is issued, the person applying for the same\nshall state correctly the description, weight, number of wheels,\nbreadth of tires, and width of the machine or load, together\nwith the name and address of the owner thereof, which par-\nticulars shall be entered in the permit.\n(c.) The permit is to be given to the bridge-keeper, and the machine\nshall not be allowed to enter upon the bridge if the description\nin the permit does not agree with the machine, nor unless\naccompanied by the bridge-keeper.\n(d.) Every precaution shall be taken against fire or other damage to\nthe bridge or railway, as required by the bridge-keeper, and\nspeed shall be a uniform rate not exceeding two miles an hour.\n(e.) The owner of any machine shall be liable to the Minister for any\ndamage done to the bridge or railway during transit of such\nmachine.\n(6.) No load shall be taken over the bridge greater than 1½ tons gross\nper wheel, except with tires 5 in. broad or wider; and no load over 2 tons\nper wheel shall pass over except under the regulations for machines; and\nloads greater than 4 tons per wheel are entirely prohibited from passing\nover the bridge.\n(7.) No person shall go upon or cross the bridge while in a state of\nintoxication.\nNGAWAPURUA BRIDGE.\n53. The following provisions shall apply to the traffic on and over the\nNgawapurua Railway-bridge, which said bridge forms part of the railway\nbetween Wellington and Napier, and is used for both ordinary and railway\ntraffic :—\n(1.) Before such permit is issued, the person applying for the same\nshall state correctly the description, weight, number of wheels,\nbreadth of tires, and width of the machine or load, together\nwith the name and address of the owner thereof, which par-\nticulars shall be entered in the permit.
