The area of 570 acres is situated along both banks of Sandstone Creek, a tributary of the Owen River. Heavy birch bush, with some rimu, totara, and pine; chiefly hilly land, with some flat along creek; well watered; granite-and-sandstone formation. At Owen Junction, thirty-four miles from Kohatu, there is an accommodation-house and post and telegraph offices. Access from Owen Junction by four miles of dray-road and three miles unformed track up Sandstone Creek.
The area of 650 acres is situated on the right-hand branch of Owen River. Accessible from Owen Junction by six and a quarter miles of dray-road and one mile unformed road up right-hand branch of Owen River. High spurs and broken country; granite formation; fair soil, with some good flats near river; heavy birch bush, with some totara and pine. Sale plan 138.

This block is bounded generally towards the north by the surveyed sections on Granite Creek, and by the northern district line of the Otumahana Survey District; towards the east and south by unsurveyed Crown lands; and towards the west by the Karamea–Seddonville Main Road and surveyed sections in Blocks II and III, Kongahu Survey District. The whole is covered with heavy mixed bush, chiefly birch, kamai, rimu, and miro, with occasional patches of white-pine towards the northern end, and the usual heavy undergrowth. The land is undulating, with good rich flats along most of the rivers and creeks, varying in altitude from 80 ft. to 1300 ft. above sea-level; formation, sandstone-and-granite gravel on papa, the whole being well watered. Access is gained by the Karamea–Seddonville Main Road and by unformed branch roads up the various creeks and rivers, the northern extremity of the block being distant about four miles and a half from the Karamea Settlement, and the southern end about twelve miles from Seddonville. A metalled dray-road from the sea-coast by way of the Little Wanganui Valley taps the block midway on the Karamea–Seddonville Road. Sale plan 135.

Dart Block.

The area of 814 acres is situated on the west bank of the Dart River, a tributary of the Wangapeka, and is distant 13¾ miles from Tadmor Railway-station, of which nine miles and three-quarters is formed dray-road and four miles unformed track. The country is chiefly forest-clad hills, with small flats along the river. The forest is mixed birch and mountain-rata and a little rimu. Altitude, 1,100 ft. to 2,750 ft.; formation, granite. The area of 905 acres is reached by the same dray-road and four miles of unformed track up the Dart River and Christians Creek. The area is chiefly hilly land, with small flats on Christians Creek. The forest is brown-birch and red-birch and mountain-rata; formation, granite and sandstone. Altitude, 1,115 ft. to 2,500 ft. above the sea. Sale plan 142.
BULLER COUNTY.
Orikaka Block.

Situated in the head-waters of the Mackley or Orikaka River, a tributary of the Buller River, the southern boundary being distant about eight miles from the Inangahua Junction Post-office, and the south-eastern corner about five miles from Lyell Township. Access is given by the County Council prospecting-track, which runs through the middle of the block, and by a graded but unformed road up the Orikaka River from the main Buller coach-road. The portion of the block to the westward of the Orikaka River is composed of six main spurs from the Mount William Range, varying in altitude from 500 ft. to 2,650 ft. above sea-level, of slate formation, with outcrop of granite; very precipitous, with little soil, the vegetation being stunted and alpine in character, chiefly birches, with rimu, silver-pine, rata, totara, and miro. The portion lying to the north of the Orikaka River ranges in altitude from 800 ft. to 2,400 ft., is very broken, of clay formation with numerous coal outcrops, covered with pine scrub; the remainder of the block has an altitude of from 500 ft. to 1,900 ft., and is of slate formation. The portion lying to the north of the Coalbrookdale Track is very rough and broken, with fair soil in places, while the portion to the south of the track is not so broken, but with little soil above 1,200 ft. The forest is of the same nature as that on the western side of the Orikaka, with the addition of a little matai and kahikatea. The whole is well watered by the Orikaka River, Pensini’s Creek, and their numerous tributaries. Sale plan 136.

This block extends from Granite Creek southerly to within seven miles from Seddonville, or thirty miles from Westport. The northern end can be reached by steamer trading from Westport to the Little Wanganui River, a distance of about thirty-five miles, and access can be had to the whole area by the inland road from Mokihinui to Karamea and by proposed branch bridle-roads. The whole block is forest-clad. The central portion, lying between the sea and the Mokihinui–Karamea Road, consists of high-lying country and deep valleys, most of which are suitable for pastoral purposes. To the west the formation is limestone, while to the east it is mostly papa. The timber consists of black, brown, and silver birch, interspersed with rimu, &c., and a thick undergrowth. The altitude above sea-level extends to 1,800 ft. There is little level land, but the soil generally is very fair. Many of the hills and spurs lie to the sun, and when cleared and surface-sown will produce good cattle-feed. The southern portion of the block is entirely forest-clad with black and brown birch, rimu, &c., and mixed undergrowth, and consists partly of hills and partly of flats, the former being of limestone formation, and the latter, which skirt the banks of the Six-mile Creek and Fall Creek, containing fair soil on a gravelly sub-soil. The timber consists of black and brown birch, rimu, &c., with mixed undergrowth. Altitude varies from about 200 ft. to about 1,600 ft. above sea-level. The climate of the district is mild, and the rainfall plentiful. Sale plan 127.

This land is situated on the Kohaihai, Oparara, and Karamea Rivers, being bounded on the north by the Kohaihai River, on the south by the Otumahana Block, and on the west by freehold and leasehold lands and the sea-coast. The land is well watered, and more or less covered with forest, consisting of totara, rimu, yellow-pine, silver-pine, cedar, brown-birch, black-birch, silver-birch, kamahi, and rata; birch predominates. The underscrub may be classed as cattle-feed. The altitude of the land varies from sea-level to 1,600 ft. The formation generally is granite, but limestone crops out in places. The quality of the land towards the coast is from fair to good soil, but poorer inland. The spurs over a great portion of the area are fairly undulating, and the hilltops more or less flat. Grass should take fairly well when the land has been cleared. All the subdivisions are accessible by unformed roads, but it is proposed to make horse-roads to further open up the land. Generally speaking, this country has facilities for road-making, as gravel can be obtained almost anywhere on the block. A block of land has been reserved for sawmilling purposes. There are also auriferous lands reserved for mining purposes. The Township of Karamea is situated at the south-west portion of this block, at the mouth of the Karamea River, and good
